This is a reasonably common problem with Creative 5.1 sound cards. Do you get outside sounds of you use view 2 and then Cntrl right arrow to the tender or wagon just behind the loco? I had the same problem (no sound when outside pointing at the loco but sound when pointing one back) and fixed it by setting my sound card back to the factory defaults. I think it has something to do with the effects settings.

Hi, Latimers:

I am having the exact problems you mentioned, using my new Dell computer with a Creative 5.1 sound card...engine sounds disappear outside using key 4 view, and key 2 only when pointing at the engine itself.
I see your remedy. Do you mean using the 'Restore Defaults' button in the "Options-Sound" screen from the MSTS opening image? Doing this makes no difference. Or is there a direct approach to the card itself for setting back to factory defaults? Any help much appreciated.

On my computer, if I look in the shortcuts that were installed when I installed the software for my sound card, there is one called "Creative Restore Defaults". That's the one I mean.

Let me know if it works.

I had this problem when switching to an Audigy soundcard. The fix I was told was to run dxdiag and adjust the settings on the SOUNDS tab I think to basic acceleration.

Once I did that all the sounds came back again from the external views.

YES! All sounds are restored!
The sound card icon link didn't solve the problem, but as per anakha's suggestion I reduced the sound card acceleration from 'high' to 'basic' (using the slider in the Sound tab of DXDIAG) and the sound returned in all the MSTS views. :D
For the benefit of fellow learners following this path, DXDIAG is an application found in WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 and should be handy for diagnosing other problems as well.
Thank you to latimers and anakha for your assistance.

I might give this a try to see if it helps with my raildriver sound issues.
