Steam Effects
There's a new upload at Trainsim.com that replaces the default steam effects for steam locos. It looks quite good.

I think we have to be careful here, back in the first half of the last century, black smoke or safety valve lifting in a station was an offence and looking at old photographs, and using my fast failing memory, it was more normal just to have a light mixture of steam and smoke coming out of the chimney, when a train was up to running speed. With the fire white hot it would just be steam and clear fumes coming out of the chimney, and a puff of smoke as the fireman placed coal around the box, little and often.
I am sure a number of present day Steam Specials, try to make black smoke to impress the photographers and give a wrong impression of what steam was actually like, looking at pictures of trains coming over Shap summit, just a trace out of the chimney and the safety valves lifted and the fire bouncing in the firebox, with the extra draft from of heavy working.
Unfortunately late BR steam days saw, run down engines, very poor coal or dross, often square or round briquettes and a shortage of experienced footplate staff, which again gave a false picture as to what steam looked like in its heyday.
The more I use this new version the more I like it.
Pat.

Well said Pat, that's exactly how it was, black smoke was not looked at kindly by BR Inspectors.
I emailed the Chap who changed this asking if he would be prepared to make it slightly more dense in texture, he said no, so we will have to wait to see if others make any changes that will make it just that bit more real.
This can also be applied to Diesel exhaust if any wizzer is inclined to have
a go at it.............R

Hello
I'm the creator of the smoke mod.
Rick, please, don't say what's not true... I never told I don't want to change the smoke, and I have the emails to prove that; if it will be necessary I'll publish them! In my first email I asked you if you did try it with the different smoke colors and behaviour that MSTS allows, and I told you that I made a compromise between the two conditions.
If you like it and want to make constructive comments, you are welcome, and i'll make what it's possible to make it better; if you don't like and have constructive comments it I'll do the same; if you don't like me, i can't do anything about that, but please tell the facts as they are...
