Where abouts (in britain) is this?

The track used to run closer to the cliff edge in the past when it was doubled. After the drivers started getting worried the line was brought even further away from the edge but it must still be scary to drive a few yards away from a vertical 300 foot drop into the sea. Anyone know where it is? My previous postings in this thread give a big clue.

That will be up near Skinningrove on the Boulby Potash line!

Of-course there are many bits of line in the North-East of a similar nature. For example the line between Hartlepool and Sunderland gets very close to the cliff edge at times as does the East coast main line near Berwick.

You have to remember this is around 300ft above sea level. The area is also well known for erosion of the cliffs.

Over about 25ft, it doesnt make any difference if you drop 30,000ft, theres vary little difference to the chance of being killed! :o

I notice that even on the cliff side it's still fenced ;) Gotta keep them vandals off the line! And whoever owns the cliffs must have proper access to use his 18" of ground between the railway boundary and certain death.

Hmmm... I imagine it's a lot less scary than travelling at 100mph over a high viaduct or single line bridge.

I don't like edges, in fact I have a great fear of unenclosed heights. I don't like standing on a small table, or going up The Monument in London, but I can go to the top of the Eiffel Tower (because of the enclosed caging on the top floor), I get scared of falling off which is a bit wierd but whoever said phobias had to be rational?

Anyway, that track is far enough back from the cliff to be just about OK for me... but when I drove a narrowboat over the Pontscysyllt (or however it's spelt (where's IKB when you need him ;) )) viaduct That was too scary by half. I expect some of the country's viaducts would be just as scary.

That's exactly it. It's the fear that you can throw yourself off if you wanted. We both suffer from vertigo which is the fear of actually throwing yourself from a height, rather than heights themselves which has a different name. Anyway... going a bit off topic now. Sorry.

Remember, its not the fall that kills you, its the sudden stop at the end that hurts! :fadein:

Tell you what, I would want to set the coupling to break every 100 yards. :)

that way if it did give way, the loco coupling would break and drop just the train into the drink. :)

Try Devil's back on Snowdon. Especially when they stop the loco and everyone jump's towards the left hand side of the carriage to look down into devils kitchen, with the carriage leaning over at a few degree angle. :o I was sat on other side with my hand on the door handle.

that's a good 1000+ foot drop. :) A loco has gone over that one too, before safety rack and pinion. :)

Also agree, the falling bit is ok. :D

the last second is the killer.

im another one who really doesnt like heights!!!
going up a ladder is about as much as i can take!!!
Although going up the CN tower when i was 9 was quite an achievement i thought!!! ok, so i was totally attached to mi dad at the time and crying my eyes out but hey! hehe!
Never felt unsafe in a train though, saying that im not particularly sure ive been on a high bridge etc b4!!!
