I need to reskin.

Post by trainmad »

Is there any possible way to reskin a downloaded loco, using TSM? Or is there a way without using anything at all?

All you need is TGA Tool 2, a paint package (MS Paint is OK) and optional
SFM (Shape File Manager) if you want to rename the.ace files to match loco number.

One more thing which has not been said and is the most important thing.

PERMISSION. Always seek this before you start so you dont waste your own time

If your doing a reskin for your own personal use and do not have any plans to ever upload it/share it then you *probably* won't need to gain permission.

I don't know if you can get away with posting screenshots of your work without permission, Kind of a grey area.

What if you share it with people you know has the same software.
OK, lets take Train Sim ELP, if you re-skin the EuroStar then can you share it with your mate who also has ELP? So he does not have to do the work of re-skinning it and everything?

Technically, no. Even if it's your mate, it's still distributing the model without permission.

Firstly. Repainting something someone else has already painted still requires permission from the author of the model, and if you intend to use some of the original repaint, you'd need permission from them too.

Repainting on someone elses machine is still a form of distributing. You're doing something for someone else, not for your own personal use.

To be on the safe side, ask for permission - Most modellers will grant you permission without any problems.

If in doubt, Contact the model maker and spell out what you would like to do.

The creators e-mail addresses should be included in the model download in a readme.txt file, Some readme files state that repaints are permitted and can be distributed without permission (As long as it's not for profit).

If you can not find the creators e-mail address in the readme then you can send a Personal Message to the person who uploaded the model, They may not be the model maker but they should know whose model it was they repainted.

Im not trying to catch anyone out or anything, i just want to find out any possible floors in copyright and stuff.

What if you told your friend how to do it? Then you wouldnt do it, and he would, so technically it would be his work.

That would be ok. Providing he/she didn't distribute it.
