Busy week at Basingstoke - photos

Post by ianm42 »

Some scanned in photos I took a while ago at Basingstoke. 50's and 33's everywhere. Any guesses at the date, and the reason for such a lot of activity?

I'd guess at 1988, on a Sunday with resticted service beyong into Waterloo. 50041 has also, obviously, failed as its far too far from home and is awaiting Dale to establish just which engine on Eastleigh is the rarest on a passenger train and whether he can get to Basingstoke in time to scratch it in........... or this could be complete bull**** happy memories though of hanging around at Basing in the days of the Laverstock diversions..! Whats the name of that little pub? :drinking:

Well if it isn't a show of some kind, I would take a total guess at some kind of 3rd rail power outage, with stranded stock being moved by diesels. Date has to be late 80s due to the transition from blue and grey to NWSE colours, or Fairground SouthEast as I recall it being named... little did we know that many more inappropriate colour schemes would be applied to UK trains in the not too distant future.

I have to say that Basil did get it, but he supplied three different answers to choose from :D

And it wasn't the Basingstoke 150.

Just hedging my bets :D

And it was a not so young Dale there as I was the Station Supervisor there at the time the shots were taken!

I can't believe someone actually 'gripped' your ticket...lmao It does ring bells - I actually designed the silhouette pic on the top which in case you hadn't worked out, is Basingstoke station from the front - except now of course, its Debenhams or some such store where that was viewed from!
SnowcrashAndy has recently sent me some excellent pics from the Railshow in 87! Though not so many pics appeared of the Winchfield 150 exhibition we did a year later and that had a working 'Western' on the main line - albeit towed!!! We also took a possession of the up main line through the station in order to stable a string of loco's, including Steam, Diesel and Electric. I cannot imagine anyone getting away with that these days! :) another bit of trivia for the Basingstoke show... Area manager Gerald Daniels actually took out insurance against it raining over that weekend, in case no one turned up - he didn't have too much faith in us at the time - in the event it was something like 27,000 so your ticket seems to indicate you were in the queue to get in at 0900 on the saturday when it was a) very cold and b) we were frantically still sorting loco's out as the 59 had just arrived!

well you had the Great Western at the back, the one down by the London end of Platform one which I can't remember - probably blacked it out of my mind as its the first place I was taken to get drunk as an unsuspecting Junior Railman (may have been the Queens Arms) and theres the Rising Sun under the railway at the country end of Platform 4!

A clue of sorts: These photos were taken on a weekday, not a weekend.
