Fife - Edinburgh progressing nicely.

Post by Cobos »

Hi all,
The route is progressing nicely and I've taken some screenshots from the route so far. Parts have changed since they were taken just to sharpen it up. The route does include a model of the Forth Bridge due to the stunning work of Ron Picardi. I can't thank Ron enough for his work. Screenshots of the bridge are available at the screenshot section on UKTrainSim. I've also included a couple with the route pics. They can be viewed at http://hosting.surfanytime.co.uk/~cobos/fife-edin.htm

It will depend on the size. I have a feeling that it may have to be on CD due to the extensions to Kirkcaldy (hopefully).

WOW that looks gorgeous! I Know those factory units at inverkeithing!! The forth bridge too. Please hurry along with this!.
If you need any 3D models made give me a shout I can model pretty well although Have never actually modelled anything for trainsim since I only got it two weeks ago! I have been 3d modelling in various formats for 12 years though.

Im thinking you might need an Edninburgh castle for Princes Street gardens on the way out of waverly?

Fife Route

Post by shillingstone »

Hi

Just looked at your screenshots and they are really quite amazing. I look forward to seeing (and maybe buying!) the completed version.

As for the Forth Bridge, I agree that Ron Picardi has done an incredible job of that. I found a downloadable version of his model at http://www.train-sim.com, in two files - srvforth.zip and srvforhp.zip.

I guarantee you will not find a finer, more detailed model of the bridge in the known Trainsim universe.

Thanks Scott, much appreciated.

I would certainly enjoy having a model of Edinburgh castle to place into the route. May I ask if the modelling of Waverley station would be possible. Just the main parts. I can supply some photos. If this could be done I would gather some more detailed photos of the station.

What period of Waverly station would you like?
A lot depends on how much you need. If you take a look at the BVE edinburgh to dundee route here

http://www.gotopcs.net/bve.html

It gives a good impression of the waverly exit to the north passing under the art gallery into the gardens.

From the cab view of course you can not see the castle but you might need it in the external views. More importantly I realized you will need the art gallery as this is visible from the cab almost from the start.
I can do you an art gallery no trouble :)

Waverly Im thinking would be best modelled farly simply and then the textures used to handle most of the detail.
Basically if it is a recent period model thyen you need the car and taxi in and out ramps and walls, the booking office the news kiosk and the arrivals departures board as the main features with the general latice structure of the north canopy and pillars. This is a wee bit duanting but of you have enough pics of the period you want I can certainly model it what I might need is a little help keeping the poly count down. Greek style art gallery would be great fun to model.

You will also need haymarket station but it is fairly ordinary.

Let me know what period you want and we can discuss what pics would be helpful.

I'm having similar thoughts how to tackle Glasgow Central & Queen Street on extending the Stranraer route. I don't want to spend 3 months modelling a detailed structure, the poly count of which would bring the frame rate down to 1 FPS. However I don't want to just use MTS defaults; none are really suitable anyway. So some texture wrapped "boxes" are probably the best compromise, within my capability and the limitations of Train Sim Modeller.

Now how high is the Clyde Bridge above the river...

I had a quick look for dimensions. Could'nt find out the height above the water, could only find the span.

span lengths 62.5 m - 143.3 m - 62.5 m

Hope that helps a bit.

Sounds superb Scott. The Art Gallery would be great also. The route is present day so Waverley will be as it is now. I'm not looking for absolute accuracy. A recognisable model would be more than enough. Due to the track layout at Waverley and the limits of MSTS track pieces I will need to measure the width for the main canopy. I can get the pics up on the same site as the route progess page. And if you could do a basic model of Haymarket, superb. I'll do the measurements for MSTS as the track is almost laid. Just to do platforms 1, 7, and the parcel sidings in the south. Let me know what pics of Waverley you will need.

Many thanks

Righto then,

the 3d modelling is for me the easy part. I am currently working on getting the hang of apha channels as used in MSTS to allow fast animation and to make windows see through etc. Im working on a cab view for the black five just now and this will let me get my feet wet with a model that actually loads into MSTS.

Next Ill do waverly.

Im assuming that you will be creating the platforms to match in with your track no point in me modelling the platforms "accurately" and then finding the trains run right through them :)
The eastern end is a mess so Im assuming that your through lines will kust go through to limbo. we can then concetrate on the west / north end for which we will need some good pics of the in car ramps from the south side which is platform 1 as I recall and from the north side which is platform 2. then there are the non through line platforms whuch line up between those two and under the road above,

The roof structure is a series of sloped roofs with a wroughtiron support. There used to be a big automatic mail bagage handling conveyour up there too but it may be gon now any way well need pics of the back of the taxi ramps and the road bridge supports pics of the roof from underneath. above waverly is now waverly market which is an odd looking thing and then the strange roof landscape but I would suggest I dont model the exterior of waverly at all from above as it is likely to be out of most camera views anyway The external patforms 9 10 and 11 you are leaving out of the sim anyway so no need for external ground view from the south either there is no external north view because it is solid rock.

I suggest that we make the roof as a fanfold of flats as per the real thing
blades pointing down from the lower peaks of the fanfold onto which we map an aplhachannelled lattice texture the roof is transclucent and always mucky so that can be a plain texture. How is the light modelled in MSTS? can we set the light to give the right grey greeny gloom without having to make a texture that fiters it that way or do you need a filter texture?

do you want to model as far back as the 30 minute car park area? or stop at the front of the booking hall? In either case Ill need pics. All my pics are from the glory days of steam although of course I could drive over there and have look take pics myself. The only snag is that im in a wheelchair so it is a bit hard to move around ill check up the parking there though.

I suggest modeling the pillars as prisms textured to looklike the ribbed waverly pillars. we can make some sausage lights to hang under the roof too.

You presumably will be handling the tunnel to haymarket . I will do the art gallery as a simple structure tesxtured again since you it should not be possible to get a closeup view.
For realism it might be worth placing a carspawner on the in ramp loaded almost but not quite exclusively with black taxis. with end on the up ramp.

It has to be easier than my last project which was a coplete detailed model of HMS surprise from bilges to masthead compete with rigging guns and even galley utensils :) That model was entirely for ray tracing though and so was not popygon limited at all.

Im quite excited about this I just hope that it will come together well.
With respect to haymarket Im not sure you need a lot there. It is now mainly a from the patfrom side standard parts that you see all over MSTS there is just the exterior view with the clock. Now if you model that you need to model morrison street and gorgi road wich would be a bit daunting to do. Im pretty sure MSTS does not zoom back far enough to see it?

Let me know what you think. and send me the pics email not sure how we exhange email addresses but probably UKts admin can help there without exposing us both to spam?

Hi VERN!
I just got your compliation CD of Scottish routesm and am totally delighted with them the detail on the far north line and the west highland is lovely but you need sheep!
( actually sliced sheep a re quite a common siight on that line unfortunately).

I was particularly keen to get ayr stranraer though as I was born in that area and know it well.

I agree with you about Queen Street and GC. Queen street could be made very economically with a simple box textured for the walls as Kiosks and loos as per the real thing. the main barrier and then the roof sections as simple structres again suitably textured. I was thinking that both for waverly and for queen street you could model the pillars as very tall three sided pyramids that in reality poke well through the roof but are tectured an d smoothed to look correct from below the roof gthat way you only need three polys per pillar. If you can keep the poly count really low in a station I think there is a big advantage since it will leave room for people models and for lots of AI trains without slowing MSTS to one frame a fortnight :D I suppose at a pinch you could even model pillars like trees but they would be too obvious especially in shunting views i think?

Yes I matched magnetic platforms to go with the track, so they are already there. I tried just using canopies that are available on the net for the outside part of platforms 13,14,15,16,17,18, and 19, but they only have one set of pillars. Waverley canopies have 2 sets.

All platforms are included in the sim. Platforms 8 and 9 are now Motorail sidings, 6 is no longer there, 4 and 5 are parcel sidings, with 2 and 3 no longer there. Platforms 10 and 11 are one long thing. I may pace it out to see if I have the correct length. Measured them with a GNER 125 consist at the moment.

I'll be in Edinburgh on Saturday so I'll do pics of the in car ramps. I'll just place some buildings to reflect Waverley Market etc. I'll see how good I can get the pics for the roof and most of the interior station. Not sure on the textures. Will ask the question though.

The lines will be going through to the Calton Tunnels as I hope to try and go beyond Waverley at a later date. I have a shot of the back taken from the top of the tunnels. Not my pic though. This shows clearly how the main roof is situated.

As far as and including the booking hall would be enough I reckon. There's not much around platforms 7 and 10 anyway. The carpark can be placed using a default carpark for effect.

For Haymarket I was only looking to have the walkbridge (whatever it's term is) that goes over the track for access to platforms 3 and 4. The main buildings I reckon can be made from other models available. I'm playing around with that at the moment.

I presume it would be easier to model each part, booking hall, canopies, roof, etc seperatley. Placing them seperately would be easier, instead of one huge model, and as you mentioned with the platforms, there could be a train running right through something.

I'll private message you my email address and I'll look at some pics I have already. You would be able to tell me what you need better from what I have at the moment.

Many thanks
