My first ever railway photograph

I've just dug my old photo albums out of the loft and armed with my new scanner thought I'd share this with you all.

It shows 33025 "Sultan" at Basingstoke. It was taken on the 25/10/82. I was only 15 then. The camera was a Zenith e. One of those old Russian jobs. Very basic but very robust.

Nice, i like the slightly browned quality of the shot, gives it a very mature look :)

Just look at those old cars in the background :D and if you look carefully at the top you'll see a UFO. Maybe Basildd on his way to work

I can make out a Vauxhall Chevette, and some form of BMW. A few others that i don't remember the names of, too.

Old cars? Makes me feel a little embarrassed about my car, now :).

I looked at the pic first and thought - wow! look at all those lovely motors then saw that everyone else had spotted them too. Apart from the Chevette I see a Cortina MkII, a MkIII (I think) Triumph Dolomite. possibly a Stag, what looks like the nose of a white Hillman Imp at the far end. I am expecting Reagan and Carter to drive up in an old Jag any minute! Great picture - good exposure too, sky not burned out and detail in the shadows too. Any more?

Thought this may be of interest if not tecnically brilliant. Part of a collection of Stereo slides that I got a few weeks ago. This is the only railway one in the collection, the others are street scenes and the like.

I know what and when it is, no prizes but over to you gents and lets see how well you do.Image

You must remember, that picture is dated 1982. Those sidings may no longer exist.

Better picture on the Screenshots on the front page, avatar quality is very poor and you can barely make it out!

PS It isn't preserved!

Zenith E and Vauxhall Chevettes...

2 blasts from the past.. One brick built and indestructible, the other a rust bucket and a money pit, Ill leave you to guess which is which....

I think they calculate nuclear half-life on how long a Zenith E takes to stop working...

1982 - what a year!

I had just got over my trip to the Falklands by then :)

Anyone got their early rail pics then?

Might dig one of my "instamatics" out. my first was a Western whilst on holiday at Dawlish - might scan it when i get time- hardly magazine quality LOL

Your effort is much better than my early pics

LOL, I was born 8 months after that photo was taken.

I find the hub caps look strange, look like metal discs to me, not like these plastic hub caps or alloy / chromed wheels we get today.

I'm sorta deciding if there is an old Volvo in that pic or not.
