The mind boggles.

Post by kieranhardy »

Hi,

After scratching my head many times and altering settings on my graphics card i am absolutely stumped.

I noticed with msts on the static camera 4 view or on view 2/3 there is an ever so slight consistent stutter. On view 4 it is extremely noticeable when a loco passes by, and on 2/3 the terrain shows a tiny constant stutter.

I have come to the conclusion of when it does it though. If i'm getting frame rates of 30-35 it's smooth. But whenever i get higher frame rates in the 50's it occurs. This seems a completely stupid issue as why should a slight stutter occur the higher the frame rates? Surely it should be the other way round?

I don't get it on my XP machine but having said that my frame rates didn't go as high as they do now.

I seem to have noticed this on quite a few peoples videos on youtube, so is this perhaps something msts just does and i have to get used to it?

Hi Kieran,
A very old trick not really needed now.

Try disabling your internet connection. :-?

Good luck

Already a step ahead of you i'm afraid!

I've tried disconnecting and once disconnected i've deactivated my virus scanner and firewall but once i get high frame rates again it still does this tiny constant stutter.

Cheers,

The screen was set to 60htz but has a max of 75, putting it to 75 doesn't cure the issue either.

As i said, at 30 framerates the sim is as smooth as anything, but when they go up it creates this stupid issue.

Hi Kieran,
Well my best ever FPS is 33 (open areas) so this amateurs limited font of knowledge has run dry. Sorry.
My 'cures' have worked on my system.
Let's hope someone else sees the thread.

Good luck

1) What graphics card are you using? Is it an NVidia device?
2) What weather settings does this occur on? Is it just rain, or is it everything else?

Graphics card is a Radeon HD 5450, whilst i've not tried other weathers, it's doing it on clear weather.

This video kind of shows what i'm talking about:

At 5:50 when the Class 309 departs, it hesitates at times, and sometimes for me it is rather annoying on view 4 when i have such high frame rates.

I get the odd stutter when a new tile is loaded but this seems a consistent one at high framerates, if i pan on view 4 the stutter doesn't seem to be there but static it is.

Windows 7,

Strangely upon trying our 32" tv on the pc i didn't notice the stuttering, but what i can't work out is this monitor (which ok is getting on a bit now being over 5 years old) stutters on higher framerates, could it be perhaps the monitor just isn't up to it anymore?

It's Response Time is 16.0 ms, could this be the issue?

I would be running a newer monitor but i had to take back two LG 18.5" monitors due to pixel issues, they both had a response time of 5.0 ms.

Hi Kieran,

Just to clarify that this is from someone who uses XP SP2.

I get exactly the same problem, after i've re-booted. Once the system has been refreshed i can get high FPS (High for my lappy anyway....) of about 38, and i get exactly what you've described. However, when my lappy's been on for a few hours, and some of the virtual memory has been used, not neccasserily by MSTS, but by anything, if i go back into MSTS say a couple of hours later, my frames won't go any higher than 29, and the stuttering you describe no longer occurs until about a week later when EVERYTHING stutters because i need another reboot.

Have you tried leaving your computer on for a day or so, and see if it happens then?

Worth a try if nowt else.
Kindest regards,
Simon.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the response.

I have done a quick bit of testing, the pc had been on about an hour and i had tried an activity and got the stuttering. Upon restarting and loading that activity the stuttering had gone. But i am confused as to what is actually causing it. It doesn't seem to be any 'services' or applications within windows 7 that are running or are on a delayed start. I also tried running the things i loaded in the last hour such as Chrome and things that use flash player, but again still smooth.

Out of interest do you use google chrome? I know that chrome has issues with closing sometimes, for example if you have had chrome open a fair few hours and close it, do ctrl alt delete and about 4-5 processes may still be there. However ending these doesn't cure the stutter. But perhaps chrome could be taking up virtual memory after a while?

Edit: So it doesn't seem to be chrome either as i have tried firefox and it's started doing it again. This is absolutely crazy that i am only allowed to have my pc on for like half an hour until it starts to stutter again. Something is obviously causing it somewhere.

Would any one know as to what could be at fault?

Cheers,
