Poor old Yuri has had problems with his site before - hopefully he'll resolve whatever issues he's having and get back up and running quickly - it's an invaluable site.

I have a horrible thought that its the thorny subject of 50p in the meter time!
The current site was set up in early March last year.....and some web providers can be a bit over zealous when it comes to missing paying the bills on time!

BTW you have to resgister to see 3DTrains.com forum.
Seems like a Dos Attack? reportedly ...but it's still down for me as of now

All the domains I control are fully paid for - all till 2012. Web hosting on all the domains I control are likewise fully paid.
As I've posted elsewhere on the Web and in replies to emails I've received, the site has once again been subjected to a "Denial of Service" attack - according to hosts VentraIP your <quote> "website was getting completely hammered by hundreds of HTTP Requests, which was causing significant hardship for the server and other customers." <endquote>The site was thus suspended until the hosts are happy that the DoS attack is over.
Unfortunately, my hosts are not prepared to unsuspend the site until they are confident the DoS attack is over. More worryingly, this is the second DoS attack on my site in 2 months - I can only conclude that this is being done with malicious intent. I'm also advised that they have a "three strikes and you're out" rule. As it is, there will be a fee charged when they unsuspend the site.

Hi,

This is obviously a situation of the victim having to pay to clear up the mess whilst the perpetrator is undetected. Sadly, this points to the lack of regulatory control on the www which would help to prevent these situations from happening. Hack attacks are all too prevalent these days, and frequently, when the net is slow, I have the feeling that this problem is at the root. I remember being greeted with a wall of silence when I was working for a certain large telco about two decades ago and pointed out that this kind of scenario would be likeley and something needed to be done about it. The interested parties were far more focussed on profit.
With the web as developed as it is now, it would seem that any multilateral agreement between the major telcos to police this situation is unlikeley, although very obviously needed. It's not a question of funding, as the cost would not actually be that great, although running a department of this nature in any telco would be subject to scrutiny, as the non-profit function would be immediatley perceived as 'dead wood'.
Leaving the net as it is as present is going to result in a kind of Russian libertarianism - you can be free if you are quick enough with your machine guns.
The lack of regulation on the www has brought about a media war with mass piracy which has all but killed the music industry and has financially crippled Hollywood. We now live in fear of our communication outlets being subjected to malicious attacks from anywhere in the world. What will it take to get protection? Telcos are just turning a blind eye because it is all traffic, and the more traffic the more profit.
Regards

Hi
If you trust the Hosts then thats OK.
However I would be asking for proof, as otherwise it sounds like a Host company trying to squeeze money out of their customers for nothing.
I don't pretend to understand the WWW, but I get the feeling the problems we have in the UK are not felt in other countries.
This morning for instance, I'm getting a 10 to 15 sec lag on all websites.
Strangely enough while out walking yesterday, I noticed that a new pipe being laid, was being 'made good' very well.
Just as I tripped over a low uneven and sunken part of the pavement , caused by the poor installation of the original Diamond cables some 15 years ago.
It always amuses me watching Virgin Media's adverts for "super fast fibre optic Broadband" .... when you know that the bottle necks are all just outside peoples houses.
Cheers
Jon
