MSTS under Windows 7 - Options not being saved

I copied my last running version of MSTS over to my new Windows 7 machine and set up the permissions and security so that everything has administrator authority and read/write permissions for all files, etc. I've noticed that any option changes I make are not being saved (such as the display setting) even when I click on the save icon. The program otherwise runs just fine.
1. Where are the options saved?
2. Can that file be edited manually?
Thanks. Paul

In the registry.
Did you install MSTS or just copy an installation over? If the latter, you have no registry settings and therefore you will have nowhere for MSTS to save your changes. Search your registry on your old machine and export the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator branch to a USB stick. Then double-click on .reg file to import registry settings into your new machine.

Thanks. I found no entry in my old registry at the location you cited. The old copy of MSTS is still installed on my old machine and works just fine. I did find a registry entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator and I copied that over, then updated the entries to show the program path is actually in Program Files (x86). This has made no difference. Interestingly, the program does save activities correctly.

Are you running it as an administrator?

MSTS saves game positions in the "saves" folder which you'll find under the main "Train Simulator" folder.
As for the registry, Windows 7 does different things depending on whether you run as an administrator or not. See

Another thought - have you set the MSTS folder to read/write?
See
http://msts.steam4me.net/tutorials/inst ... #readwrite. I do see that you've installed MSTS into a Program Files folder which, in W7, can cause all sorts of permission, "security" and other PITA issues when trying to run MSTS.

OK. No joy yet. The program is running in the Program Files (x86) folder. The TrainSim master folder is set for read/write = yes and all folders and files below it the same. The program is set to run with me as administrator. As I said earlier, I moved over the registry entries I found in my old XP machine and they went into the registry on the Windows 7 machine in a similar location. I changed the file pointers to the (x86) location where necessary.
I'm tempted to move the master folder somewhere else, then actually install from the disks to see where Windows 7 puts registry entries.

Yes - the location in the registry for W7 (64bit) is different - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator
is the situation on my machine.
I hadn't spotted earlier the (x86) ref in the folder names that gives away the fact you're on the 64bit version.

If you're going to do that, install MSTS to a folder outside Program Files and avoid the grief.

The symptoms you describe can be very easily resolved by updating the permissions in the Train Simulator folder.
Try searching for posts by me using the single word "permissions". The solution is dead easy!!
