Running MSTS on 2 monitors

Post by darren10000 »

I know this has been answered before but......how do you extend MSTS to another screen, ie. Laptop to 19" monitor configured as screen 2. Failing that how do you run msts in a window so I can drag it across the 2 screens

TIA :D

Hi Darren,

I have never tried it but this is the normal method for 2 monitors:

1. Connect the second monitor to your computer.

2.For Windows 7/Vista: Control Panel - Appearance and Personalisation - Display - Change Display Settings(on right)
For XP: Control Panel - Monitor/Screen (can't remember what it is called) - Display Settings

Not quite sure about the XP method as I only use XP at school so nether have to change display settings.

3. Start MSTS

Thought I'd point out that you can only get MSTS to display in 4:3 ratio screen sizes...ie 640*480, 800*600, 1024*768, & 1280*1024. Opening full screen on non-4:3 format monitors/screens will result in a "stretched" view.

And to get MSTS in a window, use something like the following on the "Target" property of a desktop icon:

"D:\Train Simulator\train.exe" -vm:w,1024,768,16

My MSTS is on my D drive and I run it in a 1024*768 window in 16 colours.

And finally, note that the window CANNOT be resized by dragging its edges!

I run 2 monitors all the time, but as has been pointed out MSTS can't be pulled out over both screens.

1. If you run MSTS full screen on one monitor, you can't even click on the other screen or MSTS minimizes.

2. If you run MSTS in a window on one screen, then you can use the other screen to open say notepad to make notes about what you are doing while editing a route, so that is quite useful. So it is useful for route builders, but not much use for anything else.

That's exactly what I meant, running my desktop on a laptop or 24" 16:9 screen and MSTS on a 19" 5:4. As you say it seems that it cannot be done!

If you run it as a window; it does work.

It's not only useful for route builders; but also activity creation/testing as you can make notes easily by alt-tabbing between MSTS and notepad (or alternative) without losing the view. I don't have multiple monitors, so have to use the good old-fashioned pen & paper method.
