Error Reporting (XP)

Post by phill70 »

little tip
you can turn off the dreaded send/dont send error report in XP.
in control panel, system, advanced tab, error reporting, then tick disable error reporting.

error reporting windows xp.

Post by growler37 »

the constant appearing of the send error report windows is in fact a bug
in xp,according to microsoft.
in order to fix the problem you need to get service pack 1 from microsoft
or much better to buy the xp magazine its on the cover disc,as the download time from the microsoft web site is huge.service pack 1 is a
must if your running xp because sooner or later without the fix your
going to get the dreaded blue screen of death ,as it is known, which
results in loosing everything on the hard drive, and a xp reinstalation.
one note of caution if you have a hewlet packard pavilion pc you need
to download a patch from their web site before installing service pack 1
as for some reason the service pack makes it impossible to carry out
a partial backup without the fix.
best wishes kevin.

No. I won't be doing that. Unless it was just my copy Win98 SE was probably the least stable O/S i've ever worked with (not something i can accuse XP of... very stable).
I was thinking about installing 98 SE on a 2nd hard drive so i could run some applications which currently aren't keen with XP but decided against it.
I've just gotten over blue screen syndrome and i certainly aint going back.

P.S. - Did nobody like Win95?

Actually, WIN 98SE is the most stable operating system as present I believe. The thing about the send dont send message is it replaced the blue screen of death or complete lockups, it captures and isolates the program with the error and shuts it down.

Nor mine - 98SE is the most unstable thing I have ever seen!

Windows 2000 was the first stable OS from Microsoft since MS-DOS 6.2

For me, win95 (OSR2) was the most stable of the win 9x range

hehe completely contrasting views.

I hated Win95, far to unoptimised.
I loved Win98se, well built, stable, very user friendly and easy to put right
I hated Win2k, it was WinNT but far more complex. Very unfriendly and unhelpful. To much change from 98 and hard to work around
I now love WinXP. Sorts out all my problems, makes installing hardware and software very easy, and is very stable and fast.

XP is like a breath of fresh air for the MS Route Editor. No more black screens after 40 mins.

However it's not so good if I want to play old DOS games (like Transport Tycoon Deluxe) as the DOS functionality has all but disappeared from XP. Oddly, TTDLX DOS ran perfectly on ME, I didn't even have to fiddle around to get the sound working.

Apparently the Windoze version of TTDLX doesn't like XP either.

Have you tried using the compatibility mode in XP? That's basically the DOS platform, it fools the program into thinking its a different OS!

Yes but the exe program throws up a COM port error each time. The DOS version still has to have the IRQ and DMA channels configured but Control Panel/System and the "legacy" drivers on the sound card give no clue as to what these should be!

My ME system seems reasonably stable. XP ought to be better as it is supposed to throw out 'drivers' (no not train drivers!) that are uncertified (and probably train drivers who are!) Often it would be better if the s/w drivers stayed within the program they were written for. When they get changed by other program installations, it is no wonder PCs are unstable. Install an old program, and you 'update' the drivers with ancient versions. It shouldn't happen, but it does!

If the Send/Don't Send thingy is part of XP, why does it occur with the older operating system too?
