Norton comes with help files and has a website with a customer support section.

I would suggest you refer to those to get the information first hand.

My personal view is that I wouldn't allow Norton in the same room as my PC let alone install it on my PC.

Kindest regards

I use Norton at the moment, and can confirm that the latest version (2010) is not always friendly towards MSTS downloads, in particular the older ones. Something called SONAR seems to flag them up as "bad" when attempting to install them, although not all. It does not block their actual download.

Probably wrongly when installing downloads I tend to switch off SONAR for that short period of time.

When I have sufficient funds I am looking to switch to Kapersky, although I do wonder whether that won't have it's faults.

When you open Norton you'll see a screen indicating status, etc. and on the RHS there are 3 sets of options. The top one on it's RHS has a further set of 4 options. The 4th one down says SONAR Protection followed by a half pale green bar and the word On.
Put your cursor on the bar and Left Click and the bar changes colour and the word changes to Off.

A screen will open saying Security Request and offering you a duration for the period of Off.

That's a choice for yourself - I usually choose 1 hour. After that period of time the SONAR Protection switches back On.

I hope that this helps but of course if connected to the internet this may reduce your protection, although so far this has not caused me a problem.

I hope this at least allows you to input the necessary updates and patches.

Hear hear. I got rid of Norton (or 'Symantec' as they like to say now  ) and installed an alternative protection system, and my (old) PC's performance doubled overnight. Part of the problem with Norton is that it is CONTINUOUSLY scanning and rescanning and a check of Task Manager would reveal at least 6-7 Norton processes running at any one time, typically using 60-70% processor capacity!

Their customer 'service' is shocking as well, basically 'its not our problem, you've paid for it but we don't care!' There's better stuff available for FREE imo.

Just thought I'd get a quick one in!

I had Kaspersky 2009 and overall it was a good scanner. It didn't seem to intrude too much. I previously had Norton installed and upon swapping to kaspersky i noticed a huge improvement in pc startup times. I have looked up reviews for kaspersky 2010 though and i was put off by people saying it was slower and not as good as 2009. So i opted for a free scanner and went for Avira aswell as ad-aware with a free firewall called Pc tools firewall plus. Saves me spending money every year or so but keeps the pc with some protection.

Hi Kieran, I've used Kaspersky for two years now at an annual cost of around £18.00 and never had any trouble with it as regards any files for MSTS.
Mind you the cost of £18.00 is certainly far cheaper than the website one so all I would say if you wanting to go back to Kaspersky buy from you local computer shop.
Kaspersky Internet Security is meant for Vista but works with my XP system quite well so I intend to use it again at the end of the year when my licence expires.

I turned sonar off last night after I'd finished with the net and turned the router off for the night and install the lsc route with sonar o the turned off sonar put the patch in to update to version 1.1 and turned sonar on again ready for today then loaded the route and it's now v1.1. Thaks for that Ruf worked a treat. I can ow do the ECE if I want to put that in aswell.

I remember having similar issues with Norton when I used to use them before switching to Avast! Although I have I not had a virus from any file I have downloaded from UKTS up to yet. Norton used to flag some downloads as false positives when the files were not infected at all as I checked them with Avast and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which reinforced my suspicions. Personally I think Norton is just a bucket of rocks when it comes to protecting a PC! :-?.

To save starting a new topic, my Norton Antivirus turned itself off last week after the subscription ran out and it proved a long held theory I've had about it slowing down everything else.

Before I put a new antivirus in I loaded up MSTS and the fps on some routes improved by a minimum of 5 fps and a maximum of 20 fps! Avast does slow down MSTS a little, but nothing like Norton was doing.

The question really is why is anyone using Norton or any other paid for anti-virus/anti-malware programs. Microsoft have provided their Microsoft Security Essentials for free for the past year or so and from personal experience it does appear to work as well as any.
