BR (S) Maunsell Coaches

Post by rickloader »

Hello, Im delighted to report the completion of a series of new models by Mike Traves. A series of Maunsell coaches are under test, and Mike will upload to UKTS soon.

These feature the 1959 push pull sets, a 3 coach set, and a loose open second. They are superb high poly models (about 11000) and I would like to thank Mike for his hard work.
The new coaches arose from my proposal to reskin Mikes excellent 4Cor EMU to produce loco hauled stock. But we soon realised that new models would be needed, and fortunately Mike agreed to take on the project.
Ive posted here because I think it is of general interest, being the first new SR coaches for ages. Mods please move if necessary.

Thanks all for finaly makeing the Maunsell Coaches the Push Pull coach looks realy good.

I can remember them at Wareham they were used on the Swanage branch, and looking at the wheels they seem to be tke prototipcal Maunsell ones.

Well done they will definatly see service on the Watersnake route.

Here is the 3 set, comprising brake seconds and in the middle a corridor composite. Mike has also produced a loose open second which can be used to strengthen the 3 set, or the 2 coach PushPull set.
These coaches were common on secondary services in the 1950s and early 60s, and I think make a refreshing change from the ubiquitous BR MK1s.

As the Bulleid coaching sets were introduced to the West of England route from 1946 and the Bournemouth Dining sets introduced from 1947, Maunsell corridor stock was increasingly relegated to secondary duties, in many cases replacing pregrouping stock.

For example, except for a brief period, November 1959 to June 1960 when Bulleid stock was used, Maunsell corridor stock was used on the Somerset & Dorset with replacement by Bulleid stock from 1961.

In 1962 some Bulleid set formations were strengthened to eight coaches with an extra corridor composite and four Maunsell corridor seconds, later, other Bulleid sets were strengthened with three Maunsell corridor seconds. These sets lasted until the end of 1965 and were then disbanded.

Hi decapod,
............and I'm licking my lips waiting for your Schools class! Hopefully it will be available in BR and Southern liveries. I remember that one of my first Kitmaster kits was their Schools loco - I think it was "Harrow"!

Great news indeed! They will give my trains on those beautiful Southern Region routes like Lyme Regis, Steyning and New Forest an even more authentic look. Thank you!

Very nice. Perhaps Mike will let me convert them to RW, where there's a dearth of steam era coaching stock.

One thought though; the model shown could probably afford to shed a lot of polys at the lower LOD levels.

Seconded!

They would make a great addition to RW.

Thanks all for your comments. An Rw version is up to Mike of course. At present Im fiddling with the .wag file. Specifically on uncoupling and then recoupling the coaches are slightly telescoped. While I dont suppose people will carriage shunt much, im trying to get the couplings right. Shouldnt be long to release though.
I have a promise of a PP fitted M7 to go with them later. Paul, as an SEC man, you wouldnt happen to have an H tank in your unfinished files? (looking forward to the Schools too!)
John, thanks for the info. The Maunsell coaches were complex, and we chose subjects which would be typical without demanding too many model variants. The 3 set was type M which from the CWN was Western Section local services in the 50s (actually the Bournemouth line). Many 3 sets got extra Bulleid vehicles, but set 246 seems to have been unaltered.
Mike has produced several alternative PP sets with variations. A nice touch.
