Post by MasterfulEuan »

Does anyone know of some simple route building software? - im buggered if i can use microsofts poor attempt at it!

If i can find something good i will be attempting a route in devon or cornwall - i have plymouth to exeter route knowledge off by heart so wont be difficult to do.

ive been working thru the abacus route building guide which takes u thru how to use RE, and its pretty simply to me. Dynamic track is a bit fiddly but apart form that its pretty solid.

At current there is no alternative. Only varying tools that help to make certain aspects of RE easier. Like ways of producing height data.

If you want to build simple quick routes, then you should have bought Trainz instead of MSTS.

However, as you have MSTS, then you are stuck with the Route Editor. That said, all the excellent routes available on here and elsewhere were built using it, so obviously it is not that useless.

Get Michael Vone's Route building Guide, it will point you in the right direction.

The Route Editor is a complex tool, Untill you get used to it, you can spend Hour's producing scrap route's, learning the basic's.

My total attempt's at a route is 9-10, Fictional Route's, which after this I found it a lot easier to build a more accurate route, my current project.

I suggest to anyone who want's to build a route to start by just making several Tile's and mad-building some track and Siding's, add some scenery, make a few activities, to test it. This way you are getting used to all the aspect's of Msts. Just Jump in feet first.

And if you get stuck or need any help. You know where to find us.

hhmmm, trial and error. Not sure if ur gonna learn much in msts by doing that.

OK its $20, but its well worth every penny if ur serious about creating something for MSTS. Route Building Guide by Abacus is certainly the way u want to learn how to use RE. It has 2 methods. 1]By taking u step by step through building a route, involving most things ur likely to encouter on ANY route u want to build. 2] Between each step going into lots of detail and reference about each step u just took, so that if u want to understand more about what ur doing u can. Hell its almost 400 A4 pages.

OK so im trying to sell it to u here, but it doesnt matter whether ur a complete newbie to games development or uve been in it for years, this guide really does help to get to grips with the Route Editor.

I've learnt practically everything i know through trial and error, or teaching myself.

This does not include my schooling, i'm talking about -other- things :).

Definitely trial & error. My own route is slowly taking shape, but at the moment, having a crazy time with X-tracks 3.3 until I can find the right track arrangement. :fist:
I was thinking of doing London's Circle Line......then I realized I could lay track ABOVE ground level  !!!!

well i stand corrected. I have found many aspects of computer related design quite good for Trail and error creation, but RE had me stumped. I couldnt get to grips with it at all. So ive had to pay to teach myself. but im glad i did, cos its an amazing world out there. ;)
