I downloaded this loco quite some time ago and I've found that the steam usage on the loco is really demanding when I used it yesterday on the bala hub route I was getting a reading of 22250 steam usage on the HUD Display but the steam Generation rate was only 65750. If I put the train brake into the running position the loco's steam usage goes up if I reduce the cut off to 35 the engine slows, as for hills the loco limps up any hill and then stalls I then have to wait for the boiler Pressure to go back up to 225 psi from as low as 110 psi it just Eats the steam like no-ones business.

Any Ideas on this and how to cure it.

Sounds like the eng.file needs altering a wee bit matey

What route were you using it on matey?

Just spotted Bala hub stiff climb that.

And are you just driving or driving and firing manual?

I don't touch the firing side. She stalled just outside derwen on route to Corwen this morning. My ELr standard 4 76079 is smaller and powers up hills on that line. I can get up derwen bank bound for Corwen at 30mph if i really get it right and thats with 6 mk1's aswell.

Well Ben there are 2 types of eng.files ones that are fantasy and
others that are close as MSTS will allow to replicate the real thing.

Would you point out the Lines that I need to tweak that way I can sort through it easier?

Anybody got any Idea's on how to tweak the .eng file so theloco steams right

But it runs OK I tested it on the Bala Hub 4.2 route.

It took 6 Mk1's up the 1 in 50 from Dolgelley I even stopped
at Bontnewydd and Drws-Y Nant and it got away maybe some
sand were used but it did it without any pressure drop either
so that leads me to believe its your driving technique?

We found that a lot of the locos on the Bala CD could not get up the grades with AI firing due to the fireman opening the injectors, cooling the fire and losing steam.
We therefore increased the MaxBoilerOutput to compensate.

Accurate .eng files for manual firing are included in the loco folders.

If you are using a loco which is not included on the CD you will probably have the same problem.
Increasing the MaxBoilerOutput will get you up the hills but will make the loco too powerfull on the level. Blame Kuju.

Best to use one of the similar locos on the CD.

If he downloads 75027 installs it and opens the DAMPERS before
starting from anywhere that one runs perfect I have just tried it
again this time with 7 Mk1's on and making starts and stops where
I mentioned before and with using some sand it makes the climb
fine, it's damp in them thar hills.

Hand on Heart I have not changed anything in that file it was tweeked
by me for Matt Carey in the 1st place and I make sure they run OK for
Auto users.

By the way use the M key for DAMPERS and make sure the engine brakes
are OFF as well that's the [ ] keys.

I've been a bit busy. I've not forgot about testing this loco. I'll be back in touch with some feedback in a couple of days at the max.

tested 75027 again on the Bala and stalled on the same bank at Derwen. I then tried her on the Swanage and she was away but only if i got the reverser down to 35% cutoff straight awy after i got going but as for the bala she struggles even on the Bleanau line. yet 76079 blasts up both of the corwen- Denbigh and the Bleanau lines. I have 8 other standerd 4 4-60's with the same problem There David A Ward's standerd 4 Cambrian pack they struggle on hills to. How do you cure this.

Any ideas.

Ben if Rick has tested the loco and it runs fine then im afraid it must be your driving style, as he pointed out. Make sure you open the dampers to 100% by pressing the M key fully as soon as the activity starts and before you set off. I often forget that and its the biggest cause of not being able to generate enough steam. Its possible that the other loco you have been testing against starts with the dampers already fully open.

Nowt wrong with any of the standard 4 4-6-0s. If anything, as they dont fly up hills they are more realistic to handle, far more so than a lot of other models. Just because the MSTS models 'flies up a hill' it dont mean its right! The said locos are easily capable of the said route, I tested them extensively with Rick's excellent (as always) eng file and never had any problem. Reverser notched up, no more than necessary regulator, dampers open, brakes to running etc etc- not a problem! Yes they do take a bit of 'driving' rather than just pressing a few keys and sitting back!
