Re: Cabview

Hi Claypie1, when I clicked on the automatic downloader icon, it asked me that as the Folder for the Train didn't exist did I want it to create one, I replied yes and so looking in my Trainset Folder I now have a Loco Folder called 26020_class_76.
If you didn't say yes to the above question all that would happen probably is that all the files are in your Trainset Folder as seperate Files and not as they should be in a individual Train Folder.
You said earlier that you had run the loco and got a Cabview but no sound, how are you achieving this ? , if as you say that you cannot find a 26020 Folder in the files in your Trainset Folder.

Hi Claypie1

The downloads of both the locos and the cabview has caused more confusion than most others.
So I can sympathise with your frustration, however, with a little application and patience on your part, a solution is possible.

These downloads are fairly old (2002) by MSTS standards but this doesn`t mean they are inferior, the installation just needs some tweaking to bring it up to compatible MSTS standards.

The Train Community decided to adopt two standards namely, common folder and the procedure known has `alias` (redirection of files)

Unfortunately, the self extracting files do not create the loco folders, you have to make a folder in which to place the files.
So for our purposes we will be using:
 Click to view more informationClass 76 Preserved 26020 [1291201 bytes] - 26020black.exe
File ID: 6210 Date: 23 Jul 2003 - 2395 Downloads

First make a folder within your Trainset folder named: 26020_class_76
Extract the files to this folder.

Next make a folder within your Trainset folder named: common.cab
This is one of the standard folders which I referred to above.
Then make a folder within the common.cab folder named: EM1_EM2
Then using:
 Click to view more informationEM1 EM2 cabview [3523336 bytes] - EM1_EM2 cabview.zip
File ID: 4195 Date: 25 Dec 2002 - 7644 Downloads

Extract the files to the new EM1_EM2 folder.

Open the Cabview folder within the 26020_class_76 folder, open the acela.cvf file using a unicode text editor, Wordpad, ConText, etc., and replace the ALL the lines containing ../../EM1_EM2.cab/cab/ with ..\\..\\common.cab\\EM1_EM2\\
eg. CabViewFile ( ..\\..\\common.cab\\EM1_EM2\\accabfrn.ace )
Save the file.
There is one line which contains quotation marks, for some reason Steve left a space in the file name: needleblack .ace
This must still have the quotation marks after the alterations above.
"..\\..\\common.cab\\EM1_EM2\\needleblack .ace"
You can of course take the space out: needleblack.ace
The quotation marks are not then required.
..\\..\\common.cab\\EM1_EM2\\needleblack.ace

Within the 26020_class_76 folder, open the 26020_class_76.eng file, again using Wordpad, ConText etc., and locate the two Sound statements:

Sound ( "AcelaEng.sms" ) This needs to be changed to: Sound ( "..\\..\\Acela\\Sound\\AcelaEng.sms" )

Sound ( "AcelaCab.sms" ) This needs to be changed to: Sound ( "..\\..\\Acela\\Sound\\AcelaCab.sms" )

The above are the `Alias` (redirection of files) which I referred to earlier.

You now have a working loco with cabview and sounds.

For any other locos of the same type, all you have to do is copy the new acela.cvf file from your 2620_class_76/Cabview folder to the new loco cabview folder and amend the sounds statements in the .eng files as above.

Kindest regards

Hi Ray, I am sorry to have to tell you that what I posted earlier was correct and the Downloader for the File ID 6210 does ask that as the Destination Directory doesn't exist do you want one created.
I have just done so again after removing my original download from last night to prove I wasn't mistaken, I then copied the Acela Loco Sound Folder into the newly created 26020_class_76 Folder and created a Consist called 26020_LE in Activity Editor.
When trying the Loco out in the Explore mode in MSTS I had no Cabview but the sounds worked o.k. so I looked at the Cabview Folder in the Acela Train and noticed that there were more files in there than in the Cabview Folder in the 26020_class_76 loco which only had the Acela.cvf.
It was an easy job to copy all the Acela Cabview Files into the Cabview Folder of the 26020_class_76 and overwriting the existing .cvf and on trying the Train on the Track everything worked correctly.
I see while installing the Loco it does say that you must use the EM1/EMU2 Cabview File ID 4195 but the engine file uses the Acela Cabview, so if you want to use this Cabview after downloading and installing it, you must alter the Cabview line in the .eng to use it.

Hi Bob

The directory 26020_class_76 is only created by the installer if it is declared in the dialogue box.
Either C:\TRAINS\TEMP\26020_class_76 or C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\TRAINS\TRAINSET\26020_class_76 will generate a 26020_class_76 folder if it isn`t present and install into that folder.
Where as C:\TRAINS\TEMP or C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\TRAINS\TRAINSET will install directly into those folders.
This is why I recommend creating the 26020_class_76 folder before using the installer.

Steve used the name `acela` for his .cvf file, why? I don`t know.

Original EM1_EM2 acela.cvf:
SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0h0t______

Tr_CabViewFile (
CabViewType ( 1 )
CabViewFile ( ../../EM1_EM2.cab/cab/AcCabFrn.ace )

ScalePos ( 230 100 )
etc.

Recommended standard common.cab EM1_EM2 acela.cvf
SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0h0t______

Tr_CabViewFile (
CabViewType ( 1 )
CabViewFile ( ..\\..\\common.cab\\EM1_EM2\\accabfrn.ace )

ScaleRange ( 0 90 )
ScalePos ( 230 100 )
etc.

It has absolutely nothing in content or file association to do with the actual Acela folder or Acela Cabview folder.
The Cabview ( acela.cvf) statement in the .eng file is therefore valid.

No need to move any sound files:

Within the 26020_class_76 folder, open the 26020_class_76.eng file, again using Wordpad, ConText etc., and locate the two Sound statements:

Sound ( "AcelaEng.sms" ) This needs to be changed to: Sound ( "..\\..\\Acela\\Sound\\AcelaEng.sms" )

Sound ( "AcelaCab.sms" ) This needs to be changed to: Sound ( "..\\..\\Acela\\Sound\\AcelaCab.sms" )

Use the redirection statements above.

Kindest regards

Hi Ray, what you say may be true but for someone just starting out in MSTS if they did exactly as I did and say "yes" to the creation of of a Destination Directory will find that the New Loco goes directly into the Trainset Folder.
With regards to the sound, I remember lower down in the loading screen after the instruction to install the EM1/EM2 Cabview, it does tell you to copy the Sound Folder from the Acela Train into the new 26020_class_76 folder in your Trainset Folder.
This saves a beginner from going into the .eng file and amended the Sound lines until such time they are more confident to do such a thing.

You really need to give alot more information. Don't work can mean so much.

Good luck

I've Just downloaded a Deserio 350104 which is a self installer plus the File ID 3246 Adtranz Electrostar Cab View which is required for this unit. And it's also a self instaler.
Unzip them to a dummy folder call it what you like, you should then get two self installers one for the deserio and one for the Adtrainz Cab,

cClick either open or if useing Vista run as administrator on the installers.Click next, you then get this showing C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\TrainSimulator if this is where your trainsimulator is then click next again to install them.

I have down loaded these two and they work perfectly with out haveing to do any thing to them.

Have you got a Common.Cab folder in your MSTS Trains\Trainset folder?,if not you need to make a Common.Cab folder and put it in your traiset folder, then run the Adtrainz Cab installer to put the cabview there.

Where have you got your MSTS? is it in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator as that is where the installers will put them.

If it's somewhere else you will have to put it where your msts is in the extract menu.

Can you tell us which Deserio you are trying to get to work? we are not thought readers so without the name of the one you are haveing problems with it's only a hit and miss trial.

Are you useing an Electrified route? Electric trains won't run on non electrified routes with out tweaking the eng.file.

Re: Cabview

Post by scampispeedway »

Hi class377electrostar, when a loco is created, it needs a cabview to work so that you can drive it.
There are two methods that are used :-
1) The .eng file uses a Cabview in the Cabview Folder within a Loco Folder.
2) The .eng file is set up to use a Cabview away from the Loco folder and this can be either in another Loco's Cabview Folder or in a Common.cab Folder, of course they must be in your main Trainset Folder for it to work correctly.
For instance method 1) will have a line Cabview ( xxxx.cvf ) in the .eng file, where as method 2) will have a line Cabview ( "..//..//Loco//Cabview//xxxx.cvf" ) or Cabview ( "..//..//common.cab//lococlass//xxxx.cvf" )
The second method looks funny but all it does is tell the computer to go back two times to the Trainset Folder and look in either the Loco or common.cab Folder for the right Cabview.
The advantage of the common.cab method is that all the same Class/Type of loco's use the same Cabview and so saves the need to have a separate Cabview in each Loco Folder.
At the start of Trainsim not many Cabviews were around so you would end up driving an English Loco with an American/Canadian Cabview and it also used American/Canadian Sounds.
As time has gone on more correct Cabviews and Sounds were created and I've lost count of the times I have changed both to get what I wanted.
Hope this clarifies the question.
