, unpacked the ZIP file to the desktop and when I try to run the exe. file included a message comes up saying "Windows cannot access the specified path, device or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this file" This comes up even if I try to run the file as an administrator. I'm running Windows Vista Service Pack 2.

Hi
I've read that the best way of running MSTS under VISTA, is to have it installed to somewhere other than 'program files'.
Having said that you should be able to re-direct the installation to anywhere.
Then just copy and paste.
Cheers

Just to expand on what Jon has said, the security layer in Vista is doing its job....protecting the folders in Program Files from "unauthorised" writing. Which is a good thing most of the time!

To modify the security settings, all you have to do is follow the simple sequence of steps that have been posted well over 20 times now in threads all over the MSTS forum...in particular, the MSTS and Vista section.

Part of the problem can be in the way the installer is written.

For instance the ClickTeam installer help files say
Vista: Run as administrator

Vista only : if this option is not selected, the installer will be executed with normal privileges. If this option is selected, the installer will be executed with elevated privileges. Note: this option should be selected for 99% of the installers, as it is required if, for example, you install files to a sub-directory of the Program Files directory. Unselect this option only if you know what you do.
Clearly older versions of this product will not contain the appropriate coding to work properly. In this case, this is likely to be part of the problem as the Install Creator copyright notice at the end refers to 2003.

Having said that the ClickTeam installed should have worked since I selected "Run as administrator". :bad-words:

I have just rooted out my download of this and it installed with no problem. I did note that there was a reference to needing default extra Class 50 content from Microsoft, and wondered whether that has any bearing?

Other than that can't see any reason for the failure. I nearly always get a screen asking me whether I want to allow the install - probably haven't got the permissions bit quite right. But if it aint broke, etc. . . .

Good luck, Ruf
