Thames Mersey-Steam/Modern and updates....?

Post by thegreatone »

Hi everyone,
I'm enjoying this route but i'm a little confused when it says that certain activities should be run on 'modern' and others on 'steam era'. I'm running version 3.2 and it's on 'steam era' at the moment, how do I go about changing between this and modern, and what differences does it make? Also, can I update it to a newer version and what differences would that make??

Many thanks. mc.

Go to the Thames route folder and read Dave Corfields excellent Read Me file, all will be explained on changing between Steam and Modern and loads of other things.

By upgrading, the route will be extended to various locations either non existant or incomplete on 3.2. There is scenery updates and various other items explained, some detailed on the updates (put simply).

Hi mc,
Welcome to the forum.
As it says. Modern era with electrification and steam era before electrification. To change from one to the other go to your routes/mersey folder and open it and you will find 2 bat files. Installsteam.bat and Installmodern.bat. Double clicking one or the other takes you to that era and you can change back by doing the same when you like.
As for updating go to the download library/routes/merseyside railways and you will find all the necessary files to update to v4.1 (even v4.2 I think). Have a good read at each file to see which you need because I think there are a couple of patches for v3.2 first before updating to v4.1. There was a post giving all the files required so if you do a search you may find it. Or perhaps someone will be good enough to give this info again.

Hope this helps,
Terry W.

Thanks for the help. :-)
I'm sorted when it comes to changing between modern and steam now, but as for installing the downloads...... I've got the downloaded update files but what am I doing with them now? Do I simply replace the old ones in the train sim folders with these new ones? I don't really understand what all this 'zipped' etc means.

Zipped files are merely compressed files made with a utility like Winzip for making the files smaller. If you use Winzip you can usually unzip the files directly over the existing ones if you make sure the "Use folder names" box is ticked. With other utilities (like the XP unzipper) you should unzip the files to a temporary location first and then copy them to the right place. At the end of the Winzip box, at the extreme right hand side, is the folder path where they need to go.

Its a good idea to make a copy of your Mersey folder first so that if it all goes wrong you can copy it back again.
