Dorset Coast installation?

Post by FZR1000EXUP »

Hi guys,

This could potentially be a stupid and embarrassing question. :-?

I downloaded Dorset coast V3 and have tried to install it. I unzipped all the files (4) but I didn't see any readme file or instructions, so I just moved them all into the relevant directories. Then I ran Trainstore but I didn't see Dorset Coast under the Route box. Have I done something wrong?

The only stupid question is the question that you never asked ;-) Seriously - without asking questions we (collectively) never learn.

Have a look at this thread http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic.php?t=66523 which explains how to download and install Dorset Coast V3 and then upgrade it to V4.

Kindest regards

I followed the instructions given in the thread that John suggested but I'm having some problems:

1. The first time I started TS after the installation, it would load up to the "train track" load screen, then it would jump back out to windows

2. Then I opened up Train Store and I saw that Dorset Coast was on the list amongst the others

3. I quited Train Store and I restarted TS. This time it runs ok but there were only the default lines (maybe it's meant to only have the default lines)

4. I quited TS and opened Train Store again. I highlighted Dorset Coast Route V4, clicked on "Explore the Route" and picked a train. I then clicked on "Explore" and windows made a little sound and started loading TS. Again when it reached the "train track" loading screen, it jumped out to windows again.

Have you any idea what is wrong? I'm not ruling out that I didn't make any mistake during installation but I have followed exactly what the tutorial said. I would be really grateful if you could give me a hand with this. I just want to drive my local train! :(

MSTS needs at least one set of paths available for the route before you can use explore mode. Simplest way to achieve that is to unstore one activity :)

Lad491 - Thanks for the reply but I am afraid I'm being a little thick here.
I still don't quite understand what Train Store's purpose is. You said I the simplest way is to unstore one activity but there isn't any activity under Dorset Coast? Could you please explain? Many thanks.

Start TrainStore, on the top, select "classical" and not "simple"
in the left column you will now see all routes, with the symbol of stored ( in the shed) or unstored ( front view of steamer ) Here you canb store or unstore every route.
The + shows where you can expand, and for the expanded route you see all activities. Now each activity can be marked for store or unstore

After setting the marks, hit the "execute" or "activate" button to activate the selection, or whatever is the name you have in the British version of TrainStore.

The best way is to start TrainStore and hit the help button to see the handbook.

An old saying which is always ignored:
---------before operating read your instruction manual---------

Thanks very much for the reply Wim. I have followed your instructions and have understood the basic concept of Train Store. However, I have encountered an error message as I was trying to load up TS from Train store:

Error: - Item No. 1
There is NO driveable Path left "In Use" for this Route.
MSTS will not display this Route in the Route & Activity Selection screen.
Route: "Dorset Coast Route V4".
Folder: "Routes/Dorset".

Have you any idea what this means? Thanks again.

Go to TrainStore again. It is possible that you did not put the total route in store, but that all possible activities are in store. So go to "classical trainstore" as opposed to "simple trainstore"
click the + plus sign for Dorset, then it is expanded and you should see all possible activities. If there are none, you should install activities in your route. If all activities seem to be "in store" in RouteRiter, just click a few to be unstored, and give the execute command by clicking the button on the right side. You should not have the "no path"message now.

Wim - It is correct that there are currently no activities under Dorset Coast. Are you saying that in order to run Dorset Coast, I would need to install some activities, even just for exploring the route?

Indeed, each activity provides at least one path for the player. That path is also a possible starting location for explore mode. Other paths in an activity intended for AI traffic ( computer controlled other trains, AI = artificial intelligence ) might be marked as player usable, and will also provide a possible starting point for explore mode. Once started in explore mode, you can control the switches G before you or shift-G behind you, to realy explore.

There's an activity pack to download that should help you out. But really you should buy the CD. Why? because activities need stock and stock=stress, and from the luck you're having, I suspect you might suffer a seizure :D
I drove myself batty trying to install the simplest actvities at the start. Dumped a few CD's in and suddednly I have over about 3-400 working activities and enough stock to make a railway museum creator go weak at the knees, which of course makes installing future activities a lot easier.....instead of having to find and battle to set up 30 pieces of stock, you maybe need just one or two, and this lighter workload makes all the difference in getting to grips with what you are actually doing when fettling stroppy stock.

So you are saying that I should buy the CD because the installation is pretty much automatic? To be honest, I think I will buy the CD if it would make things easier as I'm still having problems trying to run DC. I have installed all the things that I've been told but it's still not working. Can you give me more info on the CD please? e.g. cost, ordering, etc.

Many thanks.

Log in here, and find Dorset Coast. It is £4.50, as are all Community CDs, and you also get a month's free premium membership as well! A very good price for an offer which saves you a lot of time installing.

How can I put this....."A media studies student could install it"

I've bought nearly all the community CD's now and they are all great (aome look better than others, but the less pretty ones will save the bacon of anyone without a domestic supercomputer), and I still have a hard time downloading anything by hand....it seems the activity authors tell your it needs "Loco-X" but leave out that Loco-X requires cabview-Y, sound-Z and file-from-some-long-deleted-comercial-route-W. Hardly their fault...when you're a true guru it's nigh on impossible to think down to lowly newbie level :D

4 and a half quid for 100 or so working actiivities to appear in your TS in about 5mins. Couldn't beat it with a very large stick indeed.
