Best for what?
For you or me?

If you have a medium-high powered PC (£1,000 - £2,999), perhaps Trainz would be better but then if you have a top spec PC (£3,000 +) then MSTS might be the way to go.

What do you really want in a Train Simulator?
Something that is realistic? Something that you can easily create your own stuff with? Perhaps something that there is a lot of addons to add to the content?

I used to have MSTS. I tried Trainz but I am glad I didnt buy it.
Hold out for Kuju's Rail Simulator, the majority of people will migrate to that.

Hi Pete
You're obviously more knowledgeable than the rest of us...

Is KRS imminent ??
Will it be realistic ??
Will making models for it be easy ??
Will there be lots of addons ??

Brian....I would say get MSTS for £4.99 or less ... and enjoy it for the next few months.

Cheers

I am a very, very keen MSTS fan, however, the other week, out of curiosity, I purchased the pro train perfect add-on, with the s-bahn leipzig add-on included from http://www.amazon.de.
I put it on my mid range computer, and was quite impressed with the graphics and playability of the game, I have since bought another pro train add-on for it, Dresden-Nurnberg and driving it in the basic mode, it seemed quite reasonable, graphically, I find it very good, possibly pro train have enhanced these add-ons as they seem superior to TRS 2006, as far as I'm concerned.
Anybody else feel the same?, However, MSTS is definitely my favourite out of the two.

The Good thing about all the Pro-trains for MSTS (I have all except PT12) is that they do two versions of each Activity. One for P3 and one for P4 machines.

Pro Train Perfect is as far as I know the name for the German version of Trainz2006

I'd agree with everyone else. I found Microsoft to be the best.

I wasn't too impressed with Trainz.

Good luck! :D

Don't forget that you can get BVE for free as well. That's pretty good. But for me, it's still microsoft that's the best

The one thing that BVE is great for is LUL routes, that is until drjimi's District Line is finished, which I for one can't wait for!!!

I had an interesting chat with the 8-year old son of some friends of mine over the weekend. He's a super train-fan and has both MSTS (sans patch or any add-ons) AND Trainz. He and his family are train-sim beginners so I asked him the question... Which did he prefer, and after some careful consideration on his part, he said that he could make his own layouts in Trainz, and he couldn't drive the engines in MSTS so Trainz was his personal favourite.

Later, I was asked to show him how to drive Flying Scotsman on the default Settle to Carlisle line. That wasn't easy, trying to explain how the brake lever worked... Poor old FS's wheels must have looked like old treepenny bits after 5 miles... But he eventually worked it all out (playing with mouse controls in cab rather than keyboard). Reverser was another goody... But he eventually got to Ribblehead viaduct under his own steam (heh heh) whilst I scribbled down copious notes and web addresses for mum and dad. He got it into reverse and managed to successfully back FS up to the stricken Royal Scot and hook up. Unfortunately it was then time for me to go so I don't know how well he did after that.

In essence... Trainz is excellent for some things and MSTS is excellent for others! BVE is excellent because it's free, and in the latest incarnation would make good payware!

Why limit yourself to one sim... If you can afford it, get the whole set!

Wonder if we'll get the MSTSX v KTS flame-wars this time next year...
