Custom Content & Support

Hi Everyone,

Here are some answers to questions from other threads that I thought would be good to discuss seperately.

Will Rail Simulator allow custom content, and can it be made available for free?
Absolutely, we want to encourage the creation and sharing of content for Rail Simulator. We hope that places such as http://www.uktrainsim.com http://www.train-sim.com and many other world wide train simulation sites will continue to support the sharing of content for Rail Simulator just as they have for previous simulations.

Will support be provided for Rail Simulator, outside the current ‘Select Band’?
I would like to confirm there is no ‘select band’ of developers working with us. Our primarily focus has been to complete the game and the overhead of supporting a large community of add-on developers in parallel would have distracted us from this goal.

However, external developers clearly provide valuable feedback on the usability of the development tools, so we compromised by involving a small number of third party developers (less than 10). These third parties have had to accept the instability in working with incomplete code (development is still in progress after all), and the occasional need to rework previously completed efforts. All of these 3rd party teams approached Rail Simulator of their own accord, and while it is true that many of these developers are from commercial outfits, there were never any precondition.

Once Rail Simulator is released, it is obvious that many more developers may be seeking support and we are currently finalising the support structure for the game. We are extremely enthusiastic about growing the development community and have great plans for the future of the Rail Simulator franchise.

Cheers

Wow! This all sounds very good (more particularly the first point). I think this sim will be well worth the wait (if nothing goes wrong before the launch).

All good news..and thanks for all/any info.
Unlike many 100's of moaners, critics and pessimists on this site..I will wait patiently for a product that will be worth it..and bring train simming up a few notches. If route building and 3d models are much easier to do then you have a winner.. people will moan at release about things 'missing' etc... they are living in a different world. Nobody will have what they 'really' wanted... but they will have the means to 'tailor' it to their requirements. That is the key to the success of this sim.
Release date..??? I don't give a damn.. when it's ready is fine by me.. .. I know it is for real..and the more work you do now..the less for us after.
Just keep up the good work.. :D

See ya.

Its all well can good having all this support but what sort of realism are we going for? are we looking at an msts/trainz game with better graphics or are we going for a simulator that simulates the life of a driver (in the cab)

a simulator that simulates the life of a driver (in the cab)
The Sims: The Locomotive Engineer.

I'd like to think it's possible to have good graphics and a good simulation. Does it have to be one or the other?

another point too is sound, graphics are important as is of course the realism of the simulation but for me a very important part is the sound, the track sound of the original MSTS was not that good, not realistic at all, the KH31 DMU sounded more like a 2 stroke generator, its my hope that the sounds in KRS will be quite an improovement.

slightly off topic i suppose but the BVE sounds were awesome, the track, points,AWS and loco sounds really were very realistic indeed, if the KRS sounds are as good then along with the graphics etc the sim really will be something good.

My impression of playing BVE was that there was a wide range of high quality samples, but that the sound engine was very basic. It has been a while since I have used BVE, however, so that may have changed.

I think we're all going to be quite amazed by the sounds in KRS, miles better than we what we think is really good now.

Wait and see I guess.
