Any news from the show in Dortmund ?

The Rail Simulator forum was very busy leading up to the UK release on October 12th 2007, this is a read-only copy of those discussions for historic and review purposes.

>>> As for shadows couldn't they at least provide MSTS-quality shadows? Those might not be the best but just having a shadow that looks reasonably correct is so much better.

There's no doubt that KRS shadows will be much better than in MSTS.

I know it's off-topic, but I just found a domain named "trainsim.net" that has been registered by Kuju. However, this was done nearly three years ago, and visiting the "site", it is clear that it has been rather registered in the context of MSTS, second attempt.

Typicaly small software house, usless and keeping the site uptodate. Even Stalker had more updates than this and that game took five+ years to be released!

Hopefully Microsoft will do a decent job and give us a real simulator, rather than some micky mouse trainz rip off.

What's Auran's sim and a Walt Disney cartoon character got to do with KRS?

Cheers
Puzzled.

I think it's important to make a distinction here, that while many of us are comparing KRS appearance to Trainz, it is being offered in a constructive manner and not intended to imply criticism - either of KRS or Trainz. Just because it looks like Trainz, doesn't mean to say we don't like it. The proof will be in the final product and if it lives up to the expectations of a decent operational simulator, with an easy to grasp route editor.

I think it's also a matter of personal opinion on what looks realistic and what doesn't. The TRS vs MSTS debate is an old and very tired one, which isn't worth starting up again (and this certainly isn't the place for it), but as a long-term TRS user having also spent a few years using MSTS I can understand where people get the "cartooney" impression of TRS from. This is actually one of the things which annoyed me with Auran's sim at first, however by adjusting things such as the camera's field of view, the gamma level and the amount of fogging on display, as well as spending time finding objects and textures which don't clash too much you can get it to look pretty convincing. If KRS looks like this then I won't be complaining, but the next person might disagree completely. KRS will never please everyone, but for me it's going the right way.

To be honest, some of the promotional screenshots for TRS really didn't do Auran any favours....

Cheers,

JB

Jivebunny, I think you made your point rather well. Heh, heh.

Yeah, amazing, and it hasn't even been released yet, surely that's a case of premature rejection?

having used TRS 2006 the only good thing i found was the uninstall!!
i think its fair to say KRS will be a significent improovement...or at least i hope so anyway, will be somewhat disappointed after all the wait if it looks anything like trainz.

The cabs built-in to TRS are showing their age, but there are a lot of very nice 3rd party cabs around. The problem with TRS cabs is they take a stupid amount of time to make due to being modelled in full 3D - I've never attempted to build one myself (yet) but I'd imagine it would take almost as much time if to make as the actual model itself. That said, there are some nice ones around. Here are a couple of screenshots - I've put them as thumbnails so as not to clog up the thread so click for larger versions

A single sided DVD-ROM contains as much data as 3,264 floppy discs ;-)

It depends on the size. I started with 140 kByte 5¼" disks. I forgot how expensive these were, but later I payed ~ 20 DM (~ 10 €) per single 720 kByte 3½" disk...
