Field weakening will be available on KRS

There is a new announcement in the KRS site, dealing with availability of field weakening for electric motors. That is something that we in a country with DC electric locos and EMUs highly desired but didn't hope could become reality. Now we only hope that also DC motor combinations (series / parallel and so on) and stepwise rheostat exclusion will be available, and that such switching be possible in manual or automatic way.

Should I be concerned that I don't seem to understand anything about field weakening?!

There is a nice explanation about this on Railsimulator's site. From our point of view of players it means more realistic traction behaviour and - for manual operation of field weakening - also more realistic (and more challenging) driving for non-electronic locos.

Field weakening / transition works a bit like the automatic transmission in your car
Instead of changing gears it changes electrical contacts/connections to the traction motors
And it sounds a lot better with a V16/ V24 making the noise

Now does this mean we can have realistic control of Class 86/87 locos?
On those, the 'throttle' doesn't control the amount of power, it controls the rate of change of power.

I really dont see the point in kuju's latest news information, it seems rather...... useless!

Poor old Kuju. They get harangued on here for not releasing any news. Then they publish an article which indicates they are taking the physics seriously this time round and still get slagged off.

That sounds neat.

I continue to wonder if there will be fully functioning signals.

Yeh but electric trains are useless too....

I agree with bigblue, why dont they post more about the stuff that matters like how the signalling works and train features that may or may not apear in KRS rather than baffling us with science about the EMF produced by a motor etc etc, i went to college to do that! More info about gameplay would be helpful! :)

Aha, if they told you everything now, they wouldn't have anything fun to save up for the launch ;-)

I reckon this will set them a hefty challenge with matching soundsets! Just thinking in particular of a class 37 where the two diverts are very noticeable.... glad, though, to see that this will be more realistic

Very true.... maybe its not such a useless peice of information after all :P

The fact that halve the people don't understand it simply shows that this time they dug into details in their info. Not that I care much about EMUs but seeing how they really care about what is going on in an electric motor (and generator) gives some hope for a really detailed model of what is going on in a steam engines, which is what I do hope for. So I hope for more such announcements.
