Which 3D Modelling Software?

The Rail Simulator forum was very busy leading up to the UK release on October 12th 2007, this is a read-only copy of those discussions for historic and review purposes.

Has anyone ever tried SketchUp? It's now owned by Google, but the full original version is only about 300 US Dollars and can export 3DS, DWG, DXF, OBJ, XSI, FBX or WRL. Would that be any use? I'm sure someone could write a plug-in to export to whichever crazy format Kuju decides to use.

Ah, I didn't search on the MSTS forums. I see it's been discussed already. I use SketchUp in my daily work, linking it with mapping data from a GIS, and it's a great tool for creating textured buildings and the like. I'm not sure how you'd go about creating complex models such as locos however - it's functionality for curved surfaces seems to be rather limited.
