Not another simulator!
First TATS, then TMTS, then TRS2006, and now this!
Is there a need for all these train sims?

I do agree with you, its goign to be hard to decide. At the moment, nearly everyone in this community is an MSTS fan & trainz fans hang around on their forum. Now its seems its all goign to be split up, and lost of people going different ways.
Mind you though, if any of the simulators have multiplayer, im sure that wold make it very popular,as lots of people seem to crave it!

It may just be time for me to fix up my PC so that I can use it again!
This really is fantastic news... As long as they make it RailDriver console compatible.
PLUS! It's European... UK and German railways only! That'll be a bonus for us here, but I can see an awful lot of developers in the US having nothing at all to do with it.
The train simming future is looking decidedly rosey again.

I agree that the MSTS communities may well get split up by these new sims. After years of concentrating on one game, all of a sudden along come several new ones! However, I think that TRS2006 will be similar to TRS2004, in that the Trainz community will love it but there will still be the "MSTSers" who aren't really bothered by it. So we can discount that as a real successor to MSTS. It seems TATS will be very American-focused, and I'm guessing that it won't have much appeal in Europe. That just leaves us with TMTS and KRS. So my opinion, and it's nothing more, is that the UKTS community will be split two ways, between TMTS and KRS (or both), and that the other sims won't make much impact here. Of course this is assuming that both these sims come out in 2006, and turn out to be as good as they so far are seeming and promising!

Surely the more choice and variety the better? Is there a need for all these train sims?
TRS was never going to make any impact here, for no other reason than no other one ever has and I can't be bothered to spend any time with Auran after already begin stabbed in the back by them previously. So my opinion, and it's nothing more, is that the UKTS community will be split two ways, between TMTS and KRS (or both), and that the other sims won't make much impact here.
I see no reason why TMTS and KRS will cause a split, certainly it is my intention to fully support both products. If TA:R comes out then I will endeavour to put as much effort in to supporting that one equally as well. One thing is for sure, they are all taking slightly different approaches, so there's room for them all.
Matt.
I realised the popularity of MSTS was far wider than we could've ever imagined when I saw a middle aged gentleman openly reading the Sybex MSTS Official Strategy Guide in the carriage of an overcrowded underground train one time. Somewhere along the line it became socially acceptable for those who would otherwise deny their interest in railways to come out and buy train simulators...MSTS being the one to really kickstart the trend of them. Just like Flight Sim, MSTS has built up a huge and faithful following who will definetely await the release of an unofficial TS2 with eager anticipation.

Nope, this latest one appears fineIs there a need for all these train sims?
I couldn't believe that screenshot. I know they're 'posed' but even allowing for that, it looks splendid.
No specific info, as usual but this is the first most have heard of it. Can't help wondering who else, if anyone, has known for any amount of time?
What's most encouraging is that Kuju have the technology and EA have the experience. Half my PC Games have EA branding, the better half as well. Only MS beats them for quality IMHO.
The community is already split when looking from the outside at the different factions. Inside each faction it probably doesn't appear the same.
As for compatibility, I hope it's not! Scrap the old and bring on the new. Most models and routes have a very short life span and MSTS can continue with TMTS.
Have a feeling it will be 'dissed' (appalling word) by those who believe it's MSTS, MSTS based or nothing.
Don't think the market can support three new sims of the same type. However, they're not the same. This may suffer if it doesn't include the US although I'm 'over the moon' at the thought of a dedicated European Sim. TATS have been quiet lately. They were involved with Kuju. Perhaps there's an oppurtunity there?
It's going to be a very interesting year.
Bring them all on and we, the consumers, will have choice and can mould trainsimming collectively in large numbers as opposed to having it dictated to us by a few

That's probably for the best since this American isn't interested in another KUJU product.PLUS! It's European... UK and German railways only! That'll be a bonus for us here, but I can see an awful lot of developers in the US having nothing at all to do with it.

I would say definitely, especially if the game ends up looking anything like the screenshot!!rwaceyw wrote:First TATS, then TMTS, then TRS2006, and now this!

First time I've felt excited by anything trainsimwise for a long time.
Cheers,

Well I am Glad its coming to tell you the truth, it really doesn't matter how many sims are out there since at the end of the day I am sure people will choose which suits their taste (now we'll get "which is best MSTS/Trainz/TMTS/TATS/Kuju flame wars instead!)
We are happy with what we are doing, more sims means more choice and an expansion of the community no doubt so certainly at this end we welcome it.
I for one will be playing it when it comes out - along with TMTS of course.
