Update time. I've spent the last week or so tree planting which has caused me no end of headaches. The new Foliage pack has been invaluable as has the KRSTool from jkxx74 ( http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 6#p1038056 ).

One of the initial problems I had was that the lines are that convoluted that most of the hills are viewed from multiple angles and heights at various times. My initial attempts to try to plant from a trackside view failed miserably when I was faced with wide open spaces in the same area when viewed from a different line. The tree lofts in the new pack didn't really work for the same reason. I experimented with the KRSTool until I had the density etc just right and that worked well, well at least I'm happy with the effect. Using the tool is a lot easier than planting tree groups one by one and I found it easier to delete or move those tree groups not required than doing the whole thing "by hand". Once the tool has done its job you just need to slant each group to the contour to get a good effect.

I've managed to keep asset counts down to circa 500 per tile (I think - see http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... &sk=t&sd=a ) out in the forest area and am getting good FPS on my mediocre setup when testing. I've mixed up the trees throught the Forest, as in real life, but tried to stick to one type per tile when covering large areas. Anyway, see what you think:

The line past Cannop Ponds (I'd love someone to make some bullrushes and reeds, Derek :-? ).....

You might not believe this but there are villages and buildings along the routes but I am focusing on vegetation for the moment to get the effect right, as in nature the buildings fit into the forest! I am very fortunate that Jon Morley ("jonnysmooth") has offered to custom build ex GWR station buildings etc from plans that we have of the originals. He's also, brave man, offered to custom build some additional colliery assets as the default RS items really don't do the job. Look out for those on UKTS.

Good work there. Really captures the atmosphere of the forest.

That looks great Nick and shows off the foliage pack off very nicely.

Nick,

Please don't think I'm being critical but I notice that in the second screenshot, Serridge Jn, the hills in the background look white. The same effect is also present in the third shot but the effect is less marked. I've noticed the same in the stock Bath - Templecombe route and also had distant white buildings in Newcastle. I've convinced myself that it's only been like that since Upgrade Mk2. I can also get rid of the whiteout by changing the weather. Have you noticed Upgrade Mk2 affecting your scenery in the same way?

I've got a thread going in the RailSimulator.com support forum about this and Adam wants me to post a screenshot of the problem, only snag is that I don't have the means to do it. Would you mind if I pointed him in the direction of your second screenshot above to illustrate my point?

Don't know if they'll be of any use to you, but I've got a few photos of the Forest of Dean line from when I did a driving day there. There's not too much scenery, but there might be something that helps. Let me know if you want any and I'll send them on....

Hi Andy, yes the hills have gone white since Mk2! I haven't got round to looking at it yet but by all means point Adam at the screenshots. I did see a thread on train-sim about changing the weather but it is something I still need to look at. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Squatch, that would be great. I used to live in the Forest but don't have any photos of my time there so recent shots would be very useful to add to the historical shots I've got.

@ charlie & blackpatch Thanks for your comments guys...

Nick,

In a way I'm glad it's not only me that's got the problem! I've pointed Adam in the direction of this thread and will let you know if he comes up with a solution. The link to the RailSim forum thread on the topic is: http://www.railsimulator.com/en/node/4368

Nick,

As promised an update on the white distant scenery issue. This is what Adam's just posted in the RailSim forum  :

"Hiya,

OK, it is what I suspected. This is not a bug, fault, issue with Rail Simulator. This is simply down to haow we have authored default weather patterns.

We have applied clouds, fog density, fog colour, distant terrain colour, and under some circumstances you get an unfortunate result of the sky being darker than the horizon line, which then highlights what appear to be white mountains.

What was done in Upgrade Mk2, was the experience we gained with working on weather patterns on the Isle of Wight route, were applied to the default weather patterns.

As I have presiously commented about this, the setup is RSDL's interpretation as to how the weather should look, as well as taking into account the varied and open ended style they will get used in.

Regards
RSadam

Guess we'll have to investigate the weather blueprints......

Nick,

I think it will be down to the users to sort this out because I got one of Adam's arrogant, supercilious and frankly snotty replies when I asked if it would be addressed in a future upgrade.

I have got rid of the effect in the Bath - Templecombe and York - Newcastle routes, the only ones I've seen it in so far, by changing the weather in the scenario using the editor. Perhaps someone with better knowledge of how the different weather components interact with each other and the scenery can revise the default weather blueprints.

Let's just say it would have been great if they would describe the changes they made in the readme of the patch or elsewhere.

Without supplying assistance, this is all we can do: Someone dig out a pre-Mk2 backup and do a diff on the weather XML files. If you don't like the commandline tool, you can used the file comparison function of Context or other editors.
I will not be rocket science to map the differing file bits to the description given in PDF file 2.12.

Taking a more distant view, I can only recommend that everybody who puts a lot of time into creating a route starts out by carefully crafting a track rules file and a weather file which is tailored to his needs. Even if it is only a copy of a default file, it will decouple you from undocumented improvements in the future, and thinking twice about each of these quite fundamental values will certainly pay off for any serious route project, given the huge amount of effort which is put into them.

Hi there,

As mentioned above I am making some items for the route - here's a taster, a GWR signal box for Eastern United Collliery. Enjoy!
