Are Google Earth KMZ path files any use?

Post by jonnysmooth »

Hi all,

I've marked out paths of tracks, roads etc and saved them as .kmz files. I've come to use TMB_tools and have found that it doesn't read .kmz files.

So I've gone back into Google Earth, loaded the kmz files up and then resaved them as .kml files. Using a KMLCSV Converter app I only see the title of the kml file and no long/lat points have been saved when I've converted my .kmz into .kml in GE. Damn.

Before I painstakingly go back to GE and make a series of markers for my paths, then save them as a .kml file does anyone know of a method of getting my current .kmz files into KRS??

Any thoughts are welcome (and would save me some hair pulling :D )

Cheers.

You shouldn't need to change anything you've done so far. If the markers you saved as a kmz file are still in the folders in the left sidebar of google earth, right-clicking on that folder and choosing kml will save all the markers in a new file. I have created plenty of these, which I then convert using Mike SImpson's RS_Tools_TMB into CSV files, which I then turn into a series of named marker file, again using TMB. Then, I create blueprints for them in TMB and export them using the BlueprintEditor in the Rail Simulator folder. That's all there is to it. There is no need to use the KMLCSV application, TMB will do everything except export the finished files.

In summary, if you can still reload your kmz files into GE and see all the markers, you can save them again as kml's and convert them in RS_Tools_TMB; nothing has been lost.

I create all my series markers with the KML format. However before loading into Excel I open the KML format in notepad and remove all the coding and put each set of co-ords on to a seperate line. I then import the text data into Excel as comma seperated and bingo. I save the data out as CSV and use it with the Asset Editor.

Need any help with this give me a PM :)

I must've had a mental block or something, as today I've opened the kmz files and resaved them them as .kml's. Converted them first time in RS_tools_TMB, made the blueprints and hy presto - lines across the landscape.
