Re: Distant Mountains???
Sorry I did not see this post.
If anyone has a question and they really want it answer pm me. We do our best at reading all the posts but sometimes miss a few.
The draw distance for terrain in Rail Simulator is around 5000M, depending on your machine set up.

Derek

Thank you Derek.

Thank for the answer.. so now i know that i can return to my dear msts route and this time with the idea to finish it once and for allRSderek wrote: The draw distance for terrain in Rail Simulator is around 5000M, depending on your machine set up.

Re: Distant Mountains???
That's good for route with large recognizable objects (large viaducts closing valley and similar).RSderek wrote: View Distance settings in front end on high with a draw distance of around 5000M
And distant mountains? Mediterranean coastline and Alpine railways could suffer greatly if max. viewing distance is only 5000 m (and Rocky mountains railways too)
Re: Distant Mountains???
Actually, if you are willing to tweak your tuning.dat file, you can see objects more than 10 km away in TRS 2004. Naturally, you also need the computing power to carry the extra load but the views are impressive.bigvern wrote:On the same topic it would be useful to know what the maximum draw distance is. In MSTS it was 2000m in Trainz about 1500m. ....

Re: Distant Mountains???
I not saying it's perfect or that it will stay like that, we are looking to evolve, but this is how it is currently, and someone wanted to RSDL to say something about it.
There are creative ways around this issue of course, distance mountaings can be placed in the sky dome, by texture or ploygons, of course this would need someone to model and export it.

Re: Distant Mountains???
Why not just implement solution from MSTS? It was not perfect, but it worked quite good and performance penalties were negligible. I don't mean to copy-paste solution, just consider something similar.
Re: Distant Mountains???
5km is not bad, will have to see how it looks in practice. However part of the attraction of a route through the mountains is that as you approach through the plains, the mountains grow in stature along with your anticipation that you will soon be winding up a craggy pass with vertical slopes towering above, or perched precariously on a narrow shelf with a white-water torrent far below.
Re: Distant Mountains???
5 km is actually very good and I think more than enough for most railways, when it comes to detail. On horizon you don't need detail, just textured low-res contours of mountains, maybe even with a possibility to texture them from Google Earth or similar. Anything more is not needed.
Also I don't think, that solution with skydome is good. How do you update it, when you drive train for some time?

Re: Distant Mountains???
Is this viewed from the maximum 5000m out - If you moved the camera back would they suddenly start to disappear? Thanks for the feedback

Re: Distant Mountains???
Here is a panoramic view of Val Poschiavo with the Bernina Express station 'Alp Gruem'.

The linear distance to the visible end of the valley is around 15 kilometers. Since the train has to turn at 10 switchbacks and runs the full length of the valley you will have a different panorama at each point of the route. This cannot be covered with a backdrop.

Re: Distant Mountains???
hmmm, very impressive.
We'll see what we can do... I almost hear the 'A team music' in the background.
Let me see what we can do... I'll post something up when I have ran a few tests.

Derek
