Bin File

Post by Daffer »

I have problems with my Rail Sim and I think I will have to re-install, it is looking for plug ins and can't find local strings. I have done a lot of work laying track etc. and I do not want to lose that. I have read on this forum that I need a bin file, could someone please tell me in idiot proof language exactly how to save my present set up before I wipe the slate.

Regards

Hi,

If you back up all your Rail Simulator folder to another location you can refer to it for anything you may require at a later date.
If you have a external Hard Drive use that, by selecting the Rail Sim file right click and copy, then Paste in your new folder to that drive.
You could create a folder on your desk top and again copy and paste to that folder.
Hope this is helpful to you.

Hi Mike!

Thanks for your reply, I am really struggling at the moment. Before I saw your post I had saved the complete RS folder to disc and then uninstalled, now I am having probs getting going again. I might be glad of some more advice later.

Hi Daffer

You need to ensure that your copy of the Rail Simulator folder is not identifiable otherwise any attempts to re-install may cause confusion. Rename the copy Rail Simulator folder something like XXXRail Simulator and put it well out of the way. Parts of the contents can be copied back to the new installation once you have got it working.

Also when you try to re-install, it is best to let the installer place it in the default location in c\program files as any other location may cause problems later. If using Vista, make sure you are installing as 'Administrator'.

Geoff!

I have just reinstalled and was on the way to Rail Sim to download the Mk1 and 2 and Devs when I saw your post. What is "administrator" I have not seen this term during installing. Can I change something or do I go back and start again? Would be glad of a little guidance.

Hi Daffer

I run XP so I have not had a problem with running as 'administrator' which I believe is a Vista specific situation. Someone using Vista will be able to explain it better but this link may help - http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... r#p1091208

Hi Geoff and Mike!

Thanks for your help, I found out what administator mode is and now everything seems ok, fingers crossed.

Another subject is confusing me, when authoring an AI train I have found when entering stopping places, there is only a small list and all in the same yard. How do you enter places further afield?
