Installing Beginner's Guide to Tracklaying

Post by dsrose »

Is it just me = download bypasses install screen, appears to start to download and freezes? Or a general problem that Clockmaker / UKTS need to address? David.

No, it is not a problem UKTS need to fix - the file has been uploaded as a PDF file.

What happens on download depends on how your PC is configured - most will automatically try to open the PDF file which will take a while since it is a little over 3MB. On the other hand other PCs like mine will ask if I want to open it, get it with Get-Right or save to disc. No different to PDF files on sites such as the BBC News site.

If you are a premium member you could try right-clicking the download icon and selecting "save link as". Not sure if that would work for non-premium.

Unfortunately I'm afraid it doesn't work for non premium.
What you can do is allow the document to download (takes a while), then will leaving the IE window open, search your temporary internet files and copy the document to somewhere safe.
Cheers

Thanks, guys. Easy when you know how - particularly with the 'premium' right click. David.

Would it be more convenient if I uploaded the file in a Zip file?
A Zip file is only marginally smaller

Norman (Clockmaker), a zip file would have been easier for me and I would not have started this thread. I would suggest you use them in any future such help files. And a personal 'thank you' for those you have produced so far. David.

Clockmaker,

I also got caught with this issue, when I wrote the first of my Signalling Guides. Now I put the pdf document into a zip file using MS Explorer and up load this. It does nothing for the file size, but it certainly makes downloading easier for most people. Apparently it is something to do with the downloader's web browser and "plug-ins".

I've put tutorials in their own place now (and directly linked, not via the download system) so it should be a lot easier to get access to them. Any problems let me know :)

Hi

I am unable to open these files with adobe reader version 8.1.2. The format is unknown. I have tried a straight download and also "save target as" but the result is the same un readable!
Any suggestions please?

You do have a PDF file downloaded? Can you confirm the downloaded files name, and its size?

Hi Matt

The files are "Open Office" apparently and not "PDF" although the title is "Scenario creation 1.01" and its size is 2.72mb.
Do I now have to down load the "Open office" program to be able to read this file?

Mike,

Adobe Acrobat Standard 7 reports that Norman Ross created them in Open Org and saved them as PDF, Acrobat opens and reads them correctly.

Hi John

I am afraid you are incorrect here. Adobe reader 8 does not identify the files because they are not in "PDF" format but are in "OD" file format.
There is something wrong here perhaps the author can through some light on the subject!

Hi John

You are showing a Guide to "track laying" which is a "PDF" file but "Scenario creation" is an "OD" file.
If you try and download the "Scenario creation" tutorial from the front page of "uktrainsim" like I have done it will not be readable. Perhaps you could try this out and tell me where I may have gone wrong please.

Mike
