Please!
Is there anywhere or anything I can see or read that will help me come to terms with Rail Simulator. Frankly I despair at my ever being able to do anything but run simple routines. How do I find stock for shunting, how do I use 2d maps; all that sort of thing. At the moment I haven't a clue.
I thank you in advance and failing this I shall ask Matt if he can find a good home for my disks.

Re: HELP
Hi Peter,
I agree Rail Simulator has quite a steep learning curve, but is very enjoyable once you start understanding how things operate with the Simulator.
Have you downloaded Developers Documents (Devs Docs)
, if so if you go to the 'Rail Simulator' folder on your computer, then select 'Manuals', then click 'Developers Docs' you will find all sorts of information there from Basic to Advanced (including pictures).
For answers to your questions try looking at "0.03 Quick Start Guide" this should give you a start, failing that try a 'Search' on this Forum for the problem you are having and if all that turns up nothing, ask the question here on the Forum, someone will step in and try to help you sort things out. Most of us, as you probably already know, are a friendly bunch but everyone has a bad day.

Re: HELP
Hello Robert,
Thank you again for your kind help. I'll do my best to study the two sets of doucuments you recommend and see if that makes a difference. With regard to specific problems I fear the real problem is that I don't know enough to be able to ask, maybe that will change. I can only hope.
In the meantime my grateful thanks and kind regards
Peter

Re: HELP
Hi again Peter,
I do recommend you persevere and don't give up, I believe you will find it worth while in the end. Rail Sim has a long way to go yet to be accepted by a lot of MSTS1 users which is a shame, but it does have a lot going for it and these are still the 'early' days.
I'm sure you remember (I've now noted your Forum joining date
) the early days of MSTS1 and the learning curve with that Sim and no Forum to help out at the Beginning (as far as I know) and look what was been achieved with that.
At least KRS are definately 'hands on' with the new Sim and seem to be donating a great deal of their own personal time Posting on the Forum and helping out with peoples problems. Yes there are many problems with the RS that still need ironing out and documentation is not one of their strong points, but at least they're prepared to listen and act where they can.
Hope you do get 'top side' of things and begin to enjoy the new Sim.
All the best to you.

Re: HELP
Good morning Robert,
Don't be fooled by the amount of time I've been around. "Getting the hang of things" is a misnomer of the highest degree and not of my doing. I can handle most of MSTS bcause I can "sit in the cab" and admire the scenery but that's all I can do.
I've read and re-read "Quick Start" and frankly it doesn't help me a great deal so I will stick to the scenarios that let me just sit.
I do thank you for your efforts to help, I agree with what you say about most if not all of the people here being great folk. One thing for certainty is that you are all pretty brilliant which I fear most of you under-estimate in yourselves. This person is at best only just computer literate and at worst downright thick.
Again sincere thanks and kind regards, it's probably better that I keep out of the Forums from hereonin.

I must re-iterate Robert's advice - please don't be put off using the forums to ask for help just because you don't see yourself as an expert - how do you think the experts here started?
Take things at your own pace and just ask when unsure - with time and patience, you'll soon get the hang of things and become more confident in your abilities.

Re: HELP
Hi Peter, I started off by making notes of advice I read in this forum, and if I remember correctly I started in the Free Roam scenario on the Bath Templecombe route. Any locos and wagons etc that I placed on tracks there did not affect any of the other scenarios which are provided with that route so it's quite safe to play about in Free Roam.
At the bottom of the screen a task bar appears when you place the cursor there, click on the globe and you are in an edit mode. Place your cursor on the left side at the top of the screen and out will pop another menu. At top right of that menu frame is a little pin symbol. Click on that to hold the menu out. Further down the left hand side another menu pops out, do the same with that.
Click on the symbol in the top menu frame that looks like a loco head on, it's next to the pin symbol. That allows you to place trains. In the middle menu frame you will see a list of locos wagons coaches etc. Click on one of those and take your cursor over to a track in the main picture and see what happens. Click once to place the wagon on the track. You will see that the wagon still stays with your cursor, click once again to place another of the same wagon. Right click to get rid of that wagon from the cursor, and then go over to the list to select another one, and so on.
When you've placed a few wagons Click on the big orange triangle/arrow at the bottom right to 'save' those wagons into the Free Roam scenario, then you can carry on driving one the locos already in the scenario and shunt your wagons.
Hope this helps to get you on the way,
regards from an Old Chap.
