I got rail simulator today, then install went great. So i open it up and click on play, I then get an error message saying that it cant continue. I also get another message that says...the instruction at"0x02bb5886"referenced memory at"0x00000030". The memory could not be "read". Anyone have any ideas what this means. oh and I will be getting a better laptop so can anyone recomend one thats perfect for running KRS,preferably cheap mind you...
Thanks For any help

The sim wasn't designed to run on laptops as such, although I know some laptops do run the game ok. Try a search - as other laptop users have had issues.
Graphics have tended to be the stumbling block - but you need to post yours specs before anyone can give you an informed answer.

For what it's worth, and no guarantees(!) I am using an Acer Aspire 1694 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon X700 PCI Express with 256 mb VRAM. It's nearly two years old now and runs MSTS and Rail Simulator with no apparent problems so far! It's early days with Rail Sim yet, and I've only used the Bath Templecombe route as that is my ideal sort of line.
I run very little else on my laptop which cost £1200.00 or thereabouts. The man in the local computer shop who deals mostly with business men's requirements told me he could do one for a lot less if I didn't want such a 'high spec' graphics card! I spent the money then because I didn't want to have to buy another computer when Rail Sim and MSTS2 came out. I thought it would be a good investment for what I wanted it for. Hope this helps.
regards from an Old Chap.

Take a look at
http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 15&t=76245 where someone has posted the readme.txt file for the product with a full list of supported graphics cards.

Your other option is to go to
http://www.electronicarts.co.uk/news/10732/ and run the system evaluation tool - neatly titled "Can you run it ?". That will tell you if you meet the minimum requirements.

Personally, its seems that the people having the most problems with running RS at the moment are those with NVidia G Force cards. I have an ATi Radeon x1300 at it runs it fine with not a trace of stutter. I havent seen many (or any ?) other people with ATi cards saying they have problems.
The Acer laptops in your list all used ATi cards so, although I dont actually like Acer machines, it could be the safest bet.
You could always take RS down to the shop with you and ask if you can install it to test if it works ok. Any good shop will let you do that ( although PC World maynot ), then you can see for yourself.

I think the protection is that it's only allowed to be installed on one or possibly two PCs maximum, and it checks the interweb as well to make sure, so installing in-shop may not be as easy as it sounds. Of course, if they say yes and you do install it there and then, either buy that specific PC if you want it, or if not, make sure you uninstall RS yourself there and then. Not that all PC shop assistants are criminals, but you never know.

make sure you uninstall RS yourself there and then
Oh yes, definitely. Ive always done that myself
Mind you, the fact that it can take an hour to uninstall is a bit of a bummer. You'll be hanging around a long time

Maybe not such a good idea after all.
