Two New Scenery Objects

Post by willburton »

I've added a couple of scenery objects to the commercial buildings section.
An overhead crane and a sand silo. Both are from my Iron Foundry project and are awaiting approval.
I'm not entirely happy with the silo texture, so there may well be an update later.
I will be adding other structures in the near future.

The picture below now shows the improved version of the silo texture.

Good stuff. I particularly like the corrugated iron sheeting. Very realistic.

You're probably right about the silo. It looks derelict rather that just dirty. Or perhaps the works & factory inspectors haven't been around for a while.

Awesome work! These will look right at home on both my US and UK layouts. The foundry looks great too, cant wait till you release that too :)

Thanks all.
I think the Foundry route will have limited appeal, so I'm just going to release the foundry models individually. Then they can be mixed and matched according to the user's choice. However I've still got an awful lot of texture painting to do before they are ready.

Both are now available for download.
File ID: 19939 Name:Overhead Crane

Very nice objects.

Is the crane functional?

Just downloaded the crane, thanks!
New silo textures look great too. As for the foundry route i wouldnt mind see that released too, i find switching more fun than mainline running.
A random question, do you plan on modelling your usernames namesake trestle? that would be awesome! RS needs some wooden trestles badly.

I wondered who would be the first to ask that!
It's not functional at the moment, but it is something I'll like to get working in the future.

The problem with the foundry is it's built into my version of the Newcastle - York route, and I think it would be difficult to extract as a stand alone.
Also, there isn't much to the track layout, so operationally it's not hugely interesting. I'm only doing it because it's modelled on a real foundry I used to work in many years ago. That's why I think it's better to make all of the models available separately. Then others could use them on a more complex internal rail network of their own.

How did you know that was the Wilburton Trestle? I'm impressed!
I've got so much work to do on this project that I'm afraid I don't have time for anything else.

Hehe,
your name and the tourist train on the bridge gives it away
Really the reason i know about it is because of some pictures i saw on RP.net a few months back, apparently the line it is on has been shutdown so that a highway can be expanded :(
I hope the trestle is safe.
Btw: just looked at the crane in game and must say it looks great, very well modeled and textured, the only thing that could really improve it is a stencil shadow and if you want to get fancy some animations. :)

Yes unfortunately the line was recently severed just south of the trestle due to widening of the 405 Freeway.
However there is much local opposition to it's closure, and there is still a possibility that the gap may be bridged in the future, and a commuter service established. You can read all about it here http://www.eastsiderailnow.org
Anyway, back to business. I agree the crane needs a shadow, and I've delayed making one until after I've got some of my other models up to a similar standard.
The animation, when it comes, will simply be of the crane slowly trundling up and down the track. It would be great if I could get a sound recording of the distinctive clanking sound some of these old cranes used to make.
