RailWorks Box Shots

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Looks very nice, the shot from the deltic looks like ingame, nice effects looking more realistic, still get the download version though.

Hi Andy, the deltic is setup as per prototype in that it runs on one engine, with the second starting up at 30m.p.h. This was apparently common practice.

BP :D
Sorry but according to the books that I've read that is a myth. In fact starting an engine with the locomotive moving apparently required a certain amount of 'fudging' to overcome interlocks designed to prevent it. It was fairly extensively discussed when RailSim was released and the conclusion was that when ETH is in use the leading engine, which is running when the loco is stationary, provides the ETH supply but not until the traction generator voltage has reached a certain level. The closing of the ETH contactors at that point puts extra load on that engine which some have interpreted as it being started. The are a number of videos online that show this happening.

May be we downloaders should keep it a secret, wouldn't want to ruin the surprise, would we now.

Matt.
A good shot of the Deltic running on one engine. I assume that it's the wrong 'physics' carried over from RailSim rather than the facility to start the engines individually . Doesn't fill me with much confidence that the other physics shortcomings will have been addressed but I live in hope. I thought that today might have brought the definitive list of what's new / improved /fixed in RailWorks.

How do know they haven't modelled the Deltic running with one engine broke, with co driver pedalling frantically in the back to keep the voltage up? :)

Seriously though, one cannot judge a game either way by the state of its packaging. Though at least this far, its fair to say they have got it just about perfect. Very nice work.

Gosh!
Great cover art,looks good!
Reading this thread, about what deltics did or didnt do,(and does it really matter) reminded me of the advertising renders for Microsoft train sim all those years ago,and the pic of poor flying scotsman crossing a bridge with a coupling rod seemingly sticking up into the boiler! not to mention the six fingered lad on the triang-hornby advertisment all those years ago :D
Kind regards

Kevin,

You ask "and does it really matter". Why shouldn't we expect RS.com to get such things right? Somewhere in one of their site's news releases they did claim technical accuracy. After all setting up things like the braking systems correctly so that we get stepped braking and partial release where applicable is no more difficult than getting it wrong!

I think RSDL have done a better job than Kuju could ever done. This is a chance to show their true colours as developers. Rail Works looks the business bar none. I think give it a few months or years, we'll have some fantastic rolling stock and 3rd rail routes in the foreseeable future.

Roll on July 3rd

Well it's much nicer than the original placeholder imagery but let's not judge a book by the cover. Baxk in the 1970's Triang-Hornby had a penchant for putting dramatic images on their train set boxes but what you actually got inside was an oval of silvery looking track, a loco with mesh gears that jammed after a couple of circuits and some plastic looking generic BR coaches!

I don't use the Deltic in RS because I can't see out of the cab properly (prototypically or not!).
Mind you I do use the Deltic horn sound which I copied onto the Class 47 to get rid of that (prototypical) pathetic wheeze on its down-tone.

Hi,

Have you tried the fix that alters the view so you can see out the cab better? It was released soon after KRS was released.

I rewcently purchased the box version of Nero 9, I got a full size box and a DVD Case inside, what a waste of packaging, no excuse for the full soize box there, however with Manuals coming in the RS box it needs the full size box. Any how the problem I have with the Nero one is I am no longer set up with space to store ful lsize boxes as everything comes in DVD cases now. Gue I will jsut have to make space in my cupboard for it, the space the MSTS box currently takes up will do nicely.
