Am confused RW lunch date

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

No interest at all in getting it via Steam, I'm afraid.
Likewise. Both said emporia are now advertising the DVD version for £29.99.

I'm going to pre-order as soon as RW becomes available on Steam as I prefer digital delivery (and just having to install the Steam client, login and let the thing download is fine for me). I'm happy with RS, but look forward to the improvements which are coming with the new version and look forward to all the new goodies coming our way, not least a lot of which are in the works from 3rd parties, such as the modernised Newcastle to York and the class 90 amongst many others :).

Just make backups or burn it to CD or DVD and you will be fine, that's what i did when i downloaded RS from EA.

I don't think it works like that.

In Steam you can backup the game files once its been downloaded. While in Steam go to "My Games", right click on the game and select "Backup game files".

Although to be honest, I've yet to fully use this feature, but I did go through the steps.

The game is tied in with your steam account, and the game is tied with your account rather than your computer. When you want to reinstall or install on a new computer, then the game will automatically be downloaded on to that computer. So in one way, there is no need to have your own backup as the install disk is there for you on-line. It doesn't sound like you would get a standard installer file to back up anyway.

I was just looking on the Steam website and apparently it does have a backup feature where you can backup to a dvd and install from it.

I really hope that the RS disc version does not require a steam account to activate. It sounds like that is the case with Half-Life 2.

It is not so.
I'm waiting for Steam version, it's much more handy, especially in those "optic times". :D

On a slightly different note, I've just been looking at the box artwork on Rainforest and if I were at RS.com I might just be a tad worried that the game/sim title and initial presentation does not convey a very clear impression of what it's about. It may be this is just a placeholder image until the box art is finalised, but to me the bare title "Railworks" to those not in the know is more likely to suggest a transport strategy game. Maybe the title should read and be printed on the box - "Railworks - Train Simulator and World Builder" so that potential new users see what it's all about. Otherwise the uninitiated are likely to think it's another Locomotion or Railroads and either ignore it or buy it and find it's not the strategy game they were expecting.

I have to say though, the Black Five on the cover is much more classy than the garish and contorted HST on the original RS so full marks on that.
