Forgive me for being picky, but did the intercity versions from the eighties have buffers? Don't seem to remember them having em! I used to live by the line from B,ham to Tamworth and gazillions of HST's passed and none of them had buffers

They where fitted with buffers for use with Class 91's mainline testing or something.
