RS kickstart problem

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

RS kickstart problem

Post by nikos1 »

Hi there,
I installed RS kickstart today and was eager to try out the new function make dead engines, unfortunatly when i tried to create a dead engine i get a Runtime error '5' message. Has anyone else had this problem? I have installed the latest v1.0.98 build from Mikes website.
If Mike or anyone else could give me some assistance with this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Nikos
Open Kick Start do not select any routes or scenarios just select "Edit Rolling Stock"
Then in the next window that opens look at the far right of the page
There are a series of Radio Buttons Steam Diesel Electric Freight etc select steam for example
Then below the Radio Buttons is a window with a heading "Select Rail Vehicles Folder"
In this window navigate to Rail Vehicles for example C /Prog Files/ Rail Simulator/ Assetts/ Kuju/ Rail Simulator /Rail Vehicles
Once you spot Rail Vehicles simply hightlight Rail Vehicles click the Radio Button "Find Available Rolling Stock"
Kick Start will now locate all rolling stock in the category chosen for example "steam" these will appear in the top Right Window
Now choose a locomotive from the list for example Black Five and then click make dead engine a sub category will now appear
Black Five_Dead for example you have now created a dead locomotive in this case a dead Black Five
I hope you don't find this too complicated? it isn't really and you'll soon get the hang of it
Kind regards Stephen

Stephen, i understand all that perfectly well, but my problem is when i hit the "make dead engine" button, i get a Runtime error '5' message and the program shuts down, the program itself seems very simple but i cant do anything with it if i keep getting these errors.

Hi Nikos,

Sorry you have had that error 5 during the 'Make dead engine' option. I have checked the code and can't find where this has occurred, and have been unable to cause this problem with any engines I have tested.

1. Does this happen with just one engine? Or every engine you have tried.
2. If this happens for all engines, have you copied Serz.exe into your System32 folder (or syswow64 folder if using a 64 bit system) ?
3. If just one engine type, please advise which type so that I can check this out.
4. I have changed the code so that if this error occurs in future, then it will exit the option cleanly rather than crash the program back to the desktop.

Hi Mike,
Ive tryed several engines, from Kuju and 3rd party devs, same error for all of them.
Yes i have serz.exe in my system32 folder, i double checked and recopyed it but still same issue.
Does it matter where the RS_kickstart (i made sure it was named as you said in the readme) folder is or does it need to be in program files.
Im running the US version of railsim, would that have anything to do with it?
In addition the remove passengers option does not seem to work either, clicking the remove passengers button doesnt do anything.
:-?

Hi Nikos,

When you run Kickstart (it does not matter which folder it is installed into, as it is not registered in the registry), the border of the startup screen should read something like:-
RS_Kickstart version 1.0.98 Rail Simulator path in use is - c:\Program Files\Rail Simulator
If this does not show the correct path, then use the Options menu to fix it.

Now press 'Start' and you will see a list of routes installed.

As you are wishing to edit rolling stock, do not touch the routes, but click the 'Edit Rolling Stock' button.

In the bottom right hand corner of the next screen, navigate to the Assets\Kuju\RailSimulator\RailVehicles folder
Select the type of rolling-stock you wish to modify by clicking one of the 'Radio buttons' e.g. Diesel
Click 'Find Available Rolling-stock'
You should then get a list of all the Kuju diesels in the Available Stock box.
Select BR Green Class 47
Click 'Make Dead Engine'
You should now have 'BR Green Class 47_Dead' added to your list.

Can you tell me at what point this is failing on your system? Then I may be able to help further.

P.S. Please ensure you have the latest v1.0.98 downloaded from my site.

Ok Mike,
Thanks for your help, i managed to find the solution to the problem by following your instructions, i had been browsing directly to the folder of the specific loco (ie: going to the Railvehicles\Diesel\Class47\Green instead of telling the program to search the whole railvehicles folder) For some reason this causes the program to crash, when i tried by browsing the whole folder it worked fine. A bit strange but glad i found the solution!
Thanks for your support and the hard work you put into these tools Mike.

Hi Nikos,

I guess that was my fault. Kickstart was originally set up to edit scenarios and I just added the bits for editing rolling stock to the original program, so it is a bit convoluted in its operation.

I suppose I should really have rewritten the whole thing, but that would just confuse those who already use it, so will leave it as is for the time being.

I am glad to see I am not alone in this error. I have been poking about for nearly a week trying different things. I will try as Nikos1 has indicated worked for him and try browsing from further up the tree rather than in the specific rollingstock folder and see if that makes a difference...

Fingers crossed.

Cheers from a very hot Down Under (39 here today and extreme fire danger yet again...)
