Missing 'fakeroad' bin - can anyone help?

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Missing 'fakeroad' bin - can anyone help?

Post by BadWhippet »

Hi - I've just bought three Armstrong Powerhouse scenario packs and am having a spot of bother getting some of the scenarios to work (hoping to receive a reply from AP on that later). Basically, I'm receiving 'scenario failed to load' errors rather than outright game crashes.

In the meantime, I have opened up RS_Tools to see what, if anything, is missing from the Newcastle to York route (all the troublesome scenarios are on this route). All stock appears to be present, but I've uncovered one missing item: Rail Simulator\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulator\scenery\Procedural\1_fakeroad3.bin

I have searched here, the official Rail Simulator site and Google, but I cannot find any mention of this item. Does anyone know anything about this file? I'm not sure whether it's connected with my failing AP scenarios or whether it's an item missing from something else, but I figured I ought to fix this regardless.

Many thanks in advance,
Sue :)

Hi Sue

I cannot find this fakeroad file in my version of Rail Simulator so at this stage it is a bit of a mystery but it may help to find out why the scenario does not load. Check out this thread which has some advice on how to trace problems with fail to load scenarios - http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 21&t=83178

Hi Sue

I have all richards scenario packs and have just checked to see if i have the file listed in my folder but it does not seem to be listed in the folder.

Which scenario are you having problems with?

Please check your e-mail Sue. :)

To anyone else with a problem of scenarios failing to load, please redownload the extra stock. If you would not like to use so much bandwidth though, please contact me and I will offer a smaller sized fix!

I have this file missing from my installation too Sue, but it does not stop Richard's scenario's from working.

Thank you everyone - I appreciate your help. :)

I have no idea what that 'fakeroad' entry is either, but it's clear that it is not needed by Richard's packs, so I shall rule that out. Many thanks for the help on that. Anyway, in case it should throw light on any item common to all the failing routes, here are the packs and their results...

AP1 Variety: scenarios stored in London - Oxford route
Everything works perfectly! Wonderful scenarios too!

AP4 Passenger: scenarios stored in Newcastle - York route
Two scenarios fail: King's Cross - Darlington; Plymouth - Aberdeen
All others work perfectly.

AP5 Freight (also Newcastle - York)
Failures: Stockton - Cardiff Tidal; Carlisle Yard - Tees Yard; Tees Yard - Carlisle Yard; DRAX PT1 and DRAX PT2
Only two scenarios load.

Other possible factors:
I'm using Vista 64-bit ('nuff said)
My game is installed on a different drive and path from that used by default
The game is the UK edition updated to MK2, and I have all the official add-on packs that contain any scenarios
The only 'patch' I have is the modified cabview of the Deltic (a miracle patch I adore)
On install of Richard's routes, my IOW route kindly decided to remove itself. I hadn't backed up the Routes.xml file so I ereinstalled the IOW pack.
RS_Tools mentions that my only missing item is that fakeroad_3.bin item which is not connected with Richard's packs. All stock is present for Richard's scenarios, including the fixed class 43s.
I deleted my Blueprints.pak file

I do have a few other custom scenarios, namely Downhill Tankers, Checking the Island Line, Clearing The Line (Paddington) downloaded from here, and some JustTrain scenarios that came with the Voyager (and the required stock to run all these - oh, and a Hymek which I love but have no idea what to do with because I've never edited a scenario!). In fact, looking at my 'other factors' above, it's probably a wonder anything runs!

Thanks acorncomputer for the link. I've never used the scenario editor before so this should be a baptism of fire! I will give this a go to see if it provides clues on why my game is being such a toad!

It seems RailSimEditor.exe won't run - at all (downloaded the latest from railsimulator.com but it just quits to desktop before the splash screen appears), so I can't check the driver info either.

I'm tempted to do a complete uninstall/reinstall - just add the official add-ons plus the Voyager and then try the AP scenarios without any other custom content - see if that gets them (and RailSimEditor) working.

Hi,
please check you are not trying to open up the editor in full screen mode.

Open up main game and change the resolution to a smaller setting and untick full screen.
If you do have any questions please check out the FAQ available from the support page on the RS website.

regards
Derek

Derek - thanks very much. I didn't know about this so this is most helpful. I can see me being moved rapidly to the beginners' forum at this rate!

I suspect something is very borked in my game so I am stripping it all out and starting with a clean build. That way, I can save everyone a lot of hassle if that sorts out the problem. Not being able to play those brilliant-looking DRAX scenarios is killing me!

Hi Sue

One other point which may be useful.

Although I have avoided Vista I think the same comment will apply as for XP in that it is best to install Rail Simulator in the default Drive C location. I did originally have the main program installed on different drives and stripes in an attempt to get it to enable faster disk access but this caused a lot of problems as many add-ons do not give you the opportunity to choose the installation path and install on Drive C anyway, sometimes in folders that included the words 'Rail Simulator' but were not the correct main program location.

I have now had the main program installed in the default location on Drive C for some time and I have had no problems since doing this so It may be that some of your problems are related to a non-default location of the program.

Success!!!

Post by BadWhippet »

Thank you acorncomputer. I began wondering this too today and your post was the final push to do a complete clean install (letting the game install to the default location this time). I then installed my three AP packs and applied Richard's new fix. Everything worked! Fantastic!

But I think I've since found the cause of woe. Now with a working game, I went on to reinstall the "Downhill Tankers" scenario (file 19857 from here - includes that superb BR brake van). Afterwards, my AP5 scenarios failed to load - all but the two that had been working previously (thinking about it, this is probably the exact sequence in which I installed my scenario sets last time). AP5 is disagreeing with something installed by Downhill Tankers. I'm not sure what, but re-installing AP5 on top of Downhill Tankers has put everything right again (and both products now work perfectly). Doh! I think reinstalling the AP packs was just about the only thing I didn't think of doing!

So thanks everyone for the help - at least I've learnt a few new things! And the bad news for Richard is that I've just bought the remaining two scenario packs - let's see if I can screw these up too! :D

Hi Sue

Re-installation of RS should only be the last resort. I have two separate installations of RS (which unfortunately requires buying two copies of every program but is essential for development work) and in the last 13 months I have only re-installed RS once on one machine and then again when I got a new computer and I have only installed it once on my other computer. I take regular backups of the whole Rail Simulator folder of a working version so that if something goes wrong all I have to do is delete the faulty Rail Simulator folder entirely and replace it with a copy of the last known working copy I have. No re-installation required, unless you have installed anything since the last back-up, and when you run RS it goes straight back into the game at the point you took the back-up.

Although not necessary for normal 'playing' with the simulation, I back up the RS folder every day to secure the work I have completed that day.
