Wales and Borders 2

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Wales and Borders 2

Post by RiscaStation »

Hi

Has anyone had a problem loading the above route into Rail Simulator after the installation of the MK2 update?
I ask this because I had a problem with track missing from the Bath-Temp route and had difficulty trying to put the track right.
To cut a long story I ended up re-installing a fresh install of Rail Simulator.
I installed all the scenarios along with the Bristol-Sheffield route. I used RS_Tools to check every thing I had re-installed before making a back up copy to my external storage device before going any further.
Now, I started to install Wales and Borders. The route is a .rpk which went in until the track make over V1.3 was added. Subsequent installs of the remaining items became impossible as the Package manager reported "corrupt route re-install Rail Simulator". In fact trying to remove said track make over using the package manager uninstall facility reported "uninstall at own risk" but the option to continue was greyed out.
I would like to install Wales and Borders but I don't want to have to re-install Rail Simulator again so has anyone had this problem please?

Regards
Mike

Hi again,

Just to add to the above I re-installed as follows;--

1) The Rail Simulator program
2) The MK1 update
3) The Dev tools
4) The MK2 update
5) Bristol-Sheffield

In the credits top left it shows version V84.7a.
Does this help someone to come to a conclusion as to what may be going wrong with the Wales and Borders install?

Regards
Mike

Hi Mike, i have the W&B installed with all the elements you list above, i have no problems with this route? However saying this i have several safe copies of RS so if i have to re-install the core program i just copy and paste the Assets and Content folders and everything is back to normal, well when i say normal... as normal as this game allows

Mart

P.s sorry for not being much help :( P.P.S i have the same version as you.

Hi Mart

Thanks for stopping by. I am a bit reluctant to try a re-install of "Wales and Borders" in case RS crashed again.
Wales and Borders is a great route which I enjoyed playing.
I have made new backups of the freshly installed Rail Simulator.
Will have to summon up the courage to try and re-install Wales and Borders again.

Very grateful for you assistance Mart.

No probs, good luck, as you say the W&B is a great route, hopefully we will be seeing an upgrade to this route in the near future since shane has popped back into our world!

I have a big problem too, I finally got everything downloaded for this route.
I installed all of it. Then I went and installed the route itself.
Went into Rail Sim, wasnt on list.
Was looking on the W&B thread in Screenshots forum, it said something about Us addon, so I installed that and tried reinstalling the route.
This time, it came up with a error, cant remember what it said.
So I went to go and uninstall it, as RiscaStation had the same problem, it came up with Corrupt route XML files or summit and then uninstall at own risk, and the option was greyed out.
So then I tried to reinstall it a 3rd time, and it worked!
Went into Rail Sim to find all of my core routes gone except Hagen-Siegen.
Meaning im probably gonna have to re-install the game.

I am confused.
Regards, Jon
Take a look at Oovee.co.uk and their forums. A great site and friendly forum with free downloads.

Hi Jon,

Sorry to hear you have experienced the dreaded corrupt .xml, this was most likely caused by something you have loaded previously to Wales & Borders, a bit late for this advice now, but better before it happens again, always make a back up of your 'Assets' and 'Content' folders before adding new items.

Have a read of this Post by Adam of RSDL.

In light of several users commenting about corruption of their routes.xml after installing new routes or scenarios available for download, here is some useful advice, mainly aimed at content Authors, but worth downloaders knowing aswell.

Before Packaging, Zipping, Raring, Self Installer creating, drop your routes.xml or scenarios.xml (after conversion from bin) into your nearest web browser and see what happens. This is a good validation check that your core index files are clean and safe to work from. If the browser makes no complaint about the file and happily displays its contents then you can be sure you will not accidentally include any ill code lines that may muddle up end user copies of Rail Simulator.

If you do find errors being displayed you'll need to make sure these are rectified before shipping out any of the gorgeous content you wish to share with the rest of the hungry gamers out there. If you dont, you could inadvertantly cause an epidemic of lost routes/scenarios that im sure no-one wants to see happen.

Clearly this is useful to end users, who find items of their Rail Simulator suddenly missing. Simply drop the routes/scenarios.xml into a browser and seek out what the issue might be.

To ensure issues dont creep into your installation, especially if your creating content and want to maintain stability, it is thoroughly recommended that you do not manually edit these files. Using the Package Creator and Manager, as well as most likely Mike Simpsons tools, it is more than safe to share routes and scenarios. These tools (although RSDL cannot vouch or be held responsible for 3rd party applications) have been designed specifically to work with these files and thus do so in a very accurate manner.

Happy developing!

You can try Mike Simpsons RS Tools utility to check the Routes.xml (found under the Tools tab) or try renaming one of your Routes.xml bak files, should be found in your Content folder or if you have kept a back-up copy of your previous Content/Routes.xml folder, try copying that Routes.xml over the corrupt one and see if the missing Routes re-appear.

I always try to remember to check the Routes.xml as Adam describes after installing anything new into the Content folder to check everything is in order before continuing to add extra items.

Hope you can retreive the Routes without having to re-install RS. :-?

If you find the corrupt file Mike, I'd be more than happy to repair it for you, or to the nearest that is repairable.

Hi

I had another go at installing "Wales and Borders" without success.
Can some one tell me how I convert a .bin file to .xml file I need to check the routes as I am still having problems with "Wales and borders" route ( I installed Rail Simulator (4 default routes) then "Bristol-Sheffield" before attempting "Wales and Borders" ). The package manager Mk2 is saying the routes .xml is corrupt and Rail Simulator needs to be re-installed.
I did have both these routes running before the Mk2 update was installed I am not saying the cause is the Mk2 update but it is a bit of a coincidence.
I have mentioned above how I went about re-installing a fresh Rail Simulator it that helps.
Instruction from the community on this would be appreciated.

Routes uses the XML file that is there Mike, NOT the .bin that is also present. I questioned Adam about this ages ago but he never replied about it.

0X I'll have to pester him again, and the .bin seems to only contain the default routes.

Mike have you tried repairing the Route.xml with Mike Simpsons RSTools as I suggested earlier, found under 'Tools'.

Edit after your last Post, I'm on my laptop at the moment that hasn't got RS installed, but believe you will find the Routes.xml in Rail Simulator/Content folder or one of the folders in the Content folder. :-?

I have gone to the "Tools" and there is a "Check Routes .xml" on clicking a window opens for me to search through for the .xml but I am not finding the .xml. What am I not doing here please.
