Re: Maps for free rail sim routes
Unfortunately there are no printed maps at present. The only way is to use the #9 key to open the 2D route map to see where you are or, failing that I use the #8 key to fly ahead and see where I'm going.
Best regards
Michael

Hi John
I agree with Michael I use the 2d map to look at where I'm actually going
Kind regards Stephen

Re: Maps for free rail sim routes
Hi
having good maps would improve the RS experience many 100's %, I find using the 2D map difficult and somewhat intrusive, I prefer to plan ahead using a map rather than react to what I see at the time.
Here's hoping.
regards
Daniel

Hi
I think this is a good idea and have made a note to include a map that can be printed-off with my next route.

Re: Maps for free rail sim routes
Could it be an option to make a screenshot of the 2D map and postprocess that in a image editor?
First I would revert the colours, so you have black lines on white background. Then I would doctor the colours to make all the bubbles (signals and switches) become white. That would break the lines at the switches, but clutter the image less than those balls.
The big question is, where all the marker names end up. That depends on the route. For some, you always get a mess, for some they happen to stand nicely besides each other.
Also, when you actually endeavour into drawing a map manually, using the screenshot of the 2D map could provide a starting point and orientation, to get the map to scale.

What's needed are some route learning scenarios. Only when you've driven them a couple of dozen times will you be allowed out on a service train.

Re: Maps for free rail sim routes
Hi Guys
Because most of the RS routes are modern day routes i use Quail map Company maps. Book 2 England East. Book 3 Western. These are good references and the track is nearly spot on good if you dont know the route. The Oxford - Padd route is very good. For the somerset & Dorset I use the diagram book by G.A.PRYER vol 3 Somerset and Dorset. I also have on the Bristol-Sheffield route on the computer and i use the BRITISH RAILWAY LAYOUT PLANS OF THE 1950'S PUBLISHED BY SIGNALLING RECORD SOCIETY. All can be found on the Internet.
What i found amazing with the Oxford - Padd route when it first came out in 2007 was the fact that in the 1960/70,s I was a passenger guard on the Western region and because i learned the route back then most was still the same
Hope this helps
regards
