I Wonder

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

I Wonder

Post by smarty2 »

Hi everyone, was just wondering about all the lovely content being released from freeware authors, i make these comments as someone who does not want to go grubbing around in xml script even with utilities which are user friendly to those that are apt, my point being, as an example the great flashing warning light for the end of consists, would it be possible for authors to get together and introduce upgrades to their models to include said light or other enhancements, to be honest i had the heeby jeebies with mucking up files in my MSTS installation and if you were to look in that particular folder for rolling stock it looks like a horror story  I freely admit i am inept when it comes to such things, and i really don't want to keep re pasting my content and asset folders every time something new comes along because of my inability to be "technical", and miss out on the goodies which i would love to see spread around the lovely reskins we have, i am sure i am not alone on this one.... am i? Discuss please :)
EDIT: Here is a portion from Dave's readme. "Please don't redistribute these files, in unmodified or modified form, without permission. However content
creators are welcolm to include child references in their wagon blueprints, there is no need to seek
permission from me."
Dave B
So it seems content creators could if they wanted add this to their creations.

Regards

Mart P.S please you clever technical types please don't try to explain how "easy" messing around in them thar files is, As Kryten once said " I am sorry sir my intelligence chip appears to have melted"! :D

Hi Mart,

What lovely content? Or have I missed something? There have been no new rolling stock items on here for ages, just reskins of existing Kuju stock. (I do not include Sly's latest steam loco as it is incomplete and a teaser for his upcoming commercial version).

There is a nice loco on Spanish sites, and new passenger carriages on the Italian sites, but nothing here at all apart from factory scenery items.

I have spent hundreds of hours working on RS_Tools and RS_Kickstart (but probably only have 2 regular users), but it will all be in vain if no one builds any routes/models to use them with.

Mike, i assure you it is not in vain, i could never have gotten this far in RS without your RS Tools the Missing Bits. I have only once used the Kuju blueprint editor, it is so much simpler just to use your RS tools which is quick and easy. Keep up the hard work, while its not a engine that people will post pictures of, your tools are behind the scenes doing the hard work. :)
Dont give up Mike!

Hi Mike

I would just like to say thanks for RS_Tools I use them all the time ... fantastic stuff

Don't get down on the apparent lack of use, The version I am using dates back to MArch April time.. but it does everything I need it to do., so Have not updated.

I will continue to encourage others to " get their hands diirty " and for that your tools are indispencible

Thanks again

Mike: There are certain areas that only your tools will get us through, so please don't get the impression than none of us use them, in fact I think most of us do at some point or other! And I even advertise them whenever I see an obvious need. (Even Adam secretly uses them, but don't say I told you!! 8) )

Mart: Our stock is being adapted as we speak - well not quite as we speak - we sometime sleep as well!! Estimate 3-5 days for the first batch.

Hi Everyone
To Mart I fully sympathise with your point of view as anyone who has ever looked at MSTS files knows what a nightmare they were to try and edit, MSTS would usually throw a temper tantrum all too easily.
There are plenty of members who simply have no interest in what goes on under the hud of Rail Simulation and I fully understand that they can sometimes feel like they are missing out on new content.
Rail Simulation need to be inclusive and where ever possible make things as user friendly as possible.
If Rail Simulator is unsupported it will sadly die a sudden death and this would be a great pity.

Mike please don't give up and feel that no-one is using your Rs Tools nor indeed Kick Start because I for one can assure you this is not the case
You recently pointed me in the right direction when wishing to create dead steam locomotives to enhance a shed scene in Rail Simulator
I didn't like the idea of having to edit a bin file manually and I was amazed that your Kick Start enabled this task to be completed with ease.
I now have dead versions of most of the steam locos on my copy of Rail Simulator.
If your tools did not exist there really would be alot of members in a pickle making all types of mistakes editing various files.
Yes there are some members who enjoy tinkering about under the hud, but there are also those that just want to get going and enjoy their free time running trains.
I say again Mike your Tools are a God Send they really are I cannot praise them highly enough.
Kind regards Stephen

Oh sorry Mike, wasn't being specific again as usual! I meant in the example of all the lovely freight and carriage reskins, even RSDL could add this to their wagon packs couldn't they? And Just trains (Hint hint)
And i wasn't besmirching your fantastic tools no no no! I think your kickstart is genius :o I am just saying that due to my own ineptitude even your helpful program can't help me in respect to altering files, just frightens me is all, but i do use your tools for checking stuff and for me just having that utility is fantastic, got me out of a few sticky moments with routes i can tell you! So thanks mike for the hard work you are putting into the community :D

I am currently working on a route but progress is slow as, while RS is quick and easy to lay track, texturing terrain and 3D placement even just to 2005 MSTS standards is a very slow process. I estimate at least another month before it's in any shape for release and that's assuming I don't run into any issues with signalling and interactives. Add to that I have less time generally these days to spend on train simming and it means even a 22 mile route is going to take 3 or 4 months to build.

After that, I have a couple more projects to maybe take a look at.

I have found Mike's RS TMB invaluable in setting up the route blueprint and markers though in truth haven't really used the tool much beyond that.

Re new rolling stock, on T-S.com forum there is a link to some new Italian passenger coaches that have been released and look very good indeed.

Hi Mike

Yes Tools is a valuable piece of software and has just helped to identify a potential, and totally unexpected, problem with the scenarios for my route before uploading it.

Sly - The latest version does so much more than previous versions and making a donation and getting access to the extra features is well worth it.

Mike - your RS tools are a very valuable asset that I'd be lost without. My most recent use of it has been with track replacement which worked a treat and saved me weeks of hard labour.

One very appreciative user.

Mike

Just wanted to chime in here about RSTools. I am not smart enough to create content but recently downloaded an activity that would not work properly. RSToools indentified the problem quickly and accurately - a change in the consists fixed the problem and off I went. Could have never solved it without RSTools.
Thanks for your efforts.

Thanks to all for their kind words. However I still stick by my opinion that if we do not get some nice NEW rolling stock soon, we will be in trouble.

For those who use Kickstart, I will be posting a new version on my site later today probably which now allows users to replace the Blue Deltics with the Green ones, and with luck it will also place correct numbering on the Green ones (like D9003 etc) along with correct name rather than just giving the Green one the Blue ones name/number.

I agree Mike, the 37 should give it all a bit of a boost though.
