How do you make/copy a route

It worries me that when i select a template I get warnings about it affecting the scenarios that exist.
So to put it simply, How can I simply copy a route so that I can fiddle with it as much as I like and still have the original untouched...

Hi ightenhill
There are several ways to do this but this might help
http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... t#p1009451
Since posting that topic I have found it very much easier to edit .xml files in Notepad2 which is an free utility which not only gives each line a number, but highlights the .xml content in various colours and the editable text in black.

Hi ightenhill
I agree that it would help to have a dedicated procedure but I am sure that will come later.
You may have worked out that the quick way to make a route identical to another is to create a new route using the built in RS procedure and then replace the Assets Folder and the Content folder in the new route with those from the route that you want to copy. The problem I had doing that with my route was that the narrow gauge track did not appear in the new route whilst everything suggested that it should be an exact copy. Hence the need to edit the .xml file to copy from the source of the original route but most times the quick procedure will work OK.
Your original route will still show up in the routes listing together with your new copy and of course you can keep adding copies so that you can experiment with several at the same time whilst retaining the original intact. Simply delete any unwanted routes by clicking on them in the opening routes selection window until they turn red and press 'Delete'. You will be given the option to delete the route or not.

Yes I think you are.
I am talking about cloning/copying routes but Kick Start refers to cloning scenarios.

The KRS Route Analyzer program clones routes (and scenarios). I'm surprised people still advocate the hand method.
Check the KRS downloads section of train-sim.com

I see an update for a route analyzer but not the actual core program

Hi timetraveller
I have tried out the route cloning routine of your program which seems to work fine on the default routes.
On my own route, however, which is based on my own route template located in my developer folder, the first time I ran the clone I had no terrain or sky (even after ticking all of the developer boxes) and the second time I tried the route I had sky and terrain but no assets.
My conclusions are that the program has a problem with non-default route templates. Any ideas?
Otherwise a nice utility - why not upload a version to UKTS?.

Hi Acorncomputer,
Thanks, glad it is somewhat helpful. The program does not gather extended assets, but just clones the route info from the Routes.xml file and clones scenarios if you desire. Yes, the terrain and sky seems to be a problem in general and I have had trouble with that myself. You must tick the box, close the sim, then restart it to get this to stick. However, I have the same problem with this when creating a new route having a new texturing.bin file.
I purposely didn't have the program chase any other external assets because they could be anywhere and would require reading every bin file in the route to find them all. However, in cloning a route on the same system, the assets *should* already be in place as the pointers in the cloned route should point to them already, as does the original route. Checking the box, if not checked already, should include them.
Might upload this sometime to UKTS if I get the chance. The speed on that site is abysmal here though, and I usually avoid even downloads unless I really need them because of the speed problem.

Hi timetraveller
This is a nice utility as it is but would be a whole lot better with a little tweaking.
Can I encourage you to try and continue development of this?

Suggestions for the future, perhaps? I would entertain ideas if they are not too time consuming to program. Am considering a huge temporary move across the country (US) shortly which will keep me occupied for the next 6-8 months and generally away from computers and development, so won't probably be able to extend the functionality of this for awhile. Then we'll see. A lot depends on how far Rail Simulator goes too.
