DVD Not Needed after MK2 upgrade
As the title says.........
Im not sure if this is supposed to be the case, but my RS now loads and works correctly WITHOUT the DVD in The Drive
I had to do a complete re-install as i had one of those rouge MK1 updates....so i followed all the guides etc etc
loaded all the locos and free stuff ( no add-ons )...
I Noticed i couldnt install the dev-tools until after i installed MK2 Upgrade (contrary to some posts i had read )
Anyhoo.....all is working well ...(Result )
I have not and never have installed the No CD Patch that i heard about ....
My apologies if this is old news,
Cheers
Brian

Yes since the MK2 upgrade the dev tools don't need the DVD in the drive anymore which is good though you still need it for the "normal" program.

Re: DVD Not Needed after MK2 upgrade
In my opinion, this is the single most attractive improvement in Mk2. RS now loads far quicker.
Keeping a DVD in the drive not only slows the startup of RS, but also slows anything you do involving the file system because the computer keeps checking the status of the drive. I hope this mod was intentional. I'd hate to find another update takes us back to the old method.

For some reason, my RS still needs the DVD to run, no matter how i try and start it!!??

Re: DVD Not Needed after MK2 upgrade
You need to install the RS Developer Tools and run RailSimEditor.exe instead of RailSim.exe.
Loading time can be shortened by appending -NoSplashScreens to the target command on the icon.

Re: DVD Not Needed after MK2 upgrade
I guess the no-DVD brigade should either pay them a beer or some whiskey, or cookies, or dust off KRS and give it a whirl again. Maybe not by building complex scenarios right now, but basically, this programme does become better, in little big steps like this.

John
The size of the RailSimEditor.exe is 4.61mb. I want to get it to work without the DVD if it speeds uploading times!

Re: DVD Not Needed after MK2 upgrade
It only works with the devoloper edition go to start all programs then run it from in there

Re: DVD Not Needed after MK2 upgrade
That's odd. My RailSimEditor.exe is 353 Kb.
Did you download your DevTools from RS or from some other hosting site? I don't understand what's happening here but I'd be inclined to do a fresh DevTools download and installation from RS.

Re: DVD Not Needed after MK2 upgrade
I downloaded it from RS when it was first released, but the way things have been going with the two different versions of the Mk1 patch etc, etc, i will re-download, install and see what happens!

Re: DVD Not Needed after MK2 upgrade
It's on the RS Homepage. Scroll down and look to the right.
If you can't see it, press Ctrl-F5.

Re: DVD Not Needed after MK2 upgrade
Just one small point on this, the MK2 version of RailSim.exe now actually looks for programs like GameJackal and NOCD in memory and if it finds them, it refuses to work at all (gives you a message that an emulator has been detected). So I really believe the action of RailSimEditor.exe in starting without the DVD was a mistake and they will probably close that loophole in the next patch.
Otherwise why go to the effort of coding RailSim.exe to make it impossible to run without the DVD and yet allow you to do this through the back-door?
