Fix for missing track is out

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

CaptScarlet wrote:James, have a look at the link you used to open it, it may be pointing at a folder called "Packager" . If that is the case then you might be using the old MK1 packager. The new packager is in a folder called "PackagerDevTool". You can either copy the packager program into the other folder or change the link.

Well I hope that this is what has happened as this is what happened with me.

John
Correct as usual John. I just assumed that the link would open the correct file. Could the old one not be removed with MK2. Do we just delete that old one.

what happens if you go, start/programs files/etc/tools/package manager. That one should be updated.

I have a feeling you have 2 installed in different places.

That's how I did it but it doesn't seem to have updated it. It was the wrong one

You are right, I have one which I copied into the packager folder over the other (older) version located in C:\Program Files\Rail Simulator\Packager and another version located in C:\Program Files\Rail Simulator\PackagerDevTool. Which one should I get rid of?

When I go through the start menu, the package manager link says the shortcut has been deleted.

I ran mine from the Package manager in the RS folder. I did not use the short cut.

I see what has happened, if the user manually installed the package manager it set up a separate start menu item called "Rail Simulator Package Manager" which points to the old package manager. There is also a link to the package manager via the "Rail Simulator Development Tools / Tools which points to the Mk2 version. This is with Vista 64bit.

What I ended up doing is copying the MK2 version into the original folder ( after making a copy ) so that I wouldn't make a mistake when click on the link.

Now that we have the PackagerDevTool folder, would it be safe to delete the original Packager folder so I don't get confused?

Thanks John will do that. ATM the old one is in the recycle bin because the short cut still managed to find the old one after I moved it from it's original location. What will happen if I use the uninstall on the old PM as it is in a folder with a load of .rpk files. I don't want to mess up my system. This could have been handled by the MK2 installer a little better.
Regards James.

That's why I copied it over instead of deleting that folder.

Until we find out the answer to this, a good suggestion atm is to back up your .rpk files to somewhere not related to RS In case anything goes wrong, then we won't have to re-download everything.

Hi, I agree it could have been.

We made the package manager available to people who don't have the tools so that they can install rpk files without us having to zip up the install exe which bloated any rpk file.
Trouble is it then became a program in it's own right and moved away from the tools folder.
Not a great excuse i grant you, we will look to do things better.

regards

Derek
p.s. It ias always worth backing up any rpk files just incase, however the PM should not damage them in anyway.
To contact me email support@railsimulator.com, not here.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Michael
I keep all my downloads separate from RS and on a different hard drive sorted into different categories and logical sub categories like RSDL downloads, 3rd party downloads ( spit by type of download eg locos, scenarios, scenery etc )and payware etc

In more trouble now. Tried to associate the .rpk file with the new PM but despite browsing and finding it when I clicked open it would not associate and the file got associated with Opera. I have tried to delete the association but it won't let me. Help !

I wish I were that organised, my files are just dumped into a file on my external harddrive under RS Backup folders, which contains The Asset file, Content File and a .rpk backup file (which has no order whatsoever).

EDIT 1 @ James: Will it still let you drag the rpk folder into the package manager in the PackagerDevTool without complaining?

EDIT 2 @ RSDerek: Can we take your previous post as a "yes" answer to being able to delete the original packager folder without occuring problems?

MK 2 installed. Mine does the same. Cannot install some of the fixes. The Scenario fix worked and the Track Fix which was a manual thing. But the others cause the Package Manager to come up with an error about cannot overwrite files. Surely you should not have to mess about making files read and write with the new Package Manager. Wonder if I should start a new Topic or leave it in this one.

Following the instruction in the Readme tells me the Package is already installed when I cancelled it on the first error. Confused

Regards James.
Try running the program using the "run as administrator" option, if using Vista.

Not tried that yet Michael. I have managed to deassociated the .rpk file from Opera after a restart but if I browse to choose a program to open the file with and select the new PM it does not show in the list of programs even after I have selected it. What should have taken a few minutes has now been going on for over an hour now. Not happy !!!!!
