Mk3 upgrade wishes

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Is any of this information posted in the proposals section of the official forums? While we make every effort to view community forums, we by no means read every corner of them. Most of the time Derek and I only read community forum sections and topics that are of interest to us.

The official support forum however is read from head to toe several times a week.
Adam,

I could point out that now I've told you where to look there's no need to post the information elsewhere, after all it's in RSDL's interests to improve the product.

However if you tell me that the improvements will be considered for Upgrade Mk3, and that there will be a free Upgrade Mk3, I'll summarise the information and post it in the official forum. Some of it is already there. Sorry to appear awkward, but having just seen you lock the thread in the official forum discussing Upgrade Mk3 I've got a suspicion that I could be wasting my time.

To be fair that discussion was closed because of the continuing comment upon RSDL's desire of not commenting on the upgrades until the work is near completion and fixes known to work.
We are still busy working away on many aspects and will have more information when we feel release is near.

John,

You could read it that way, but on the other hand have you seen anything from RSDL to indicate that there will be an Upgrade Mk3? There are plenty of posts from users discussing it as if it were a given, but, as I read them, RSDL's replies to those posts avoid committing to it. Why?

Maybe a new iteration of RS is in sight rather than an update.

A new version "à la" Trainz (hopefully not)

Julien,

I hope I'm wrong but that's what I'm assuming at the moment. I'd have thought that titles that have reached the "Bargain Labels" are unlikely to have patches released.

Yes I have, in the discussions re the dispatcher it was said that the improvements to it were to be the main focus of the MK3 upgrade. As to the why they don't want to comment on it, it is basically down to trying to manage two competing things, user expectations and a developers reluctance to say something is or isn't included until it is known it has passed the testing phase for a patch. Until a change has passed testing is it quite possible for it to be dropped due to lots of reasons, so they don't want to increase expectations for a fix or improvement in case it can't be delivered.
They are between a rock and a hard place so to speak, RSDL could say yes this or that fix will or won't be in a patch but the users will jump on any comment and pick it apart, just as they pick apart RSDL's desire not to comment until they know for sure when and what will be in it.

Patience, mate.

RSDL won't be sitting on their hands. They've hinted at several things in the pipeline, both personal and commercial, and I expect they're hard at it. We'd all like to know more but all the requests from different people must detract from their work.

I reckon the best way to speed up development would be to offer a bribe. If everyone promised a couple of packets of bikkies or a bottle of Tizer on release of the good stuff they're working on, I think the work would be done in half the time!

So to get the ball rolling I pledge a packet of chocolate hobnobs for each LMS or industrial engine released before the end of June, plus additional packets for anything else I use from RSDL in the same time period.

John,

I'm not looking for a list, dates, or anything other than a commitment to release a free patch, "Upgrade Mk3" if you like, that fixes the issues not yet resolved in Upgrades Mk1 & 2, the despatcher probably being the prime candidate. A brief mention in a couple of posts, the most recent being Sep 08, doesn't give me much confidence. Perhaps, fingers crossed, it will be announced in one of the "series of significant announcements in the next eight weeks" to quote RSDL's Managing Director.

I've said my piece and we'll see what happens. In the meantime I'll concentrate on more productive activities like progressing my model railway!

I am really keen on where Rail Simulator is going, the current content is worth spending the cash for. UK content is more my fave by far, the UK has more detail when it comes to rail infrastructure.
Hiya Jungrail, i have just made a scenario, but am in two minds wether to upload it or not as the cost to a newbie could be upwards of a whopping £100, ok if you have aquired the assets over time, but not if you haven't!

I wouldn't be spending a 100 on Train Sim software, that's double the price of MSTS when it first launched, but it was worth the 50

Yep, that's the problem with micro payware, great if you have been right there at the start but a definite turn off if you have just started the hobby! Fortunately though i am hoping to add a default version which uses erm well the default RS stuff and a few payware instead of a boat load.

Cheers

I don't really see anything in the video that can't be done in KRS already.

Trees/catenary swaying in wind. Leafs dropping to ground on autumn. Train windows giving shine to ground(obiviously just alpha textured since window lights disappear on ground when the train passes platform). Pantograph sparkles could be done by transparent alpha assigned to plane which is animated to come out from somewhere in random intervals. Give me some time to prove it

Only thing that I cannot see in RS is the pantograph motion following the catenary lines as shown in video.

There is a whole list of things that BVE can do that RS cannont do. Tho this list is pending addtion/revision.

1. Proper movement on bends inclucing tilting.
2. Arching from the power cables and moving pantograph.
3. Better tracks side clutter.
4. Points gear to move the rails.
5. massively spectaular and impressive signals and gantrys.
6. good view distance.
7. its smooth
