Thanks for The IOW Route

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

And the interlocks going too would be nice with a bit of arcing to match, oh yes some nice swaying and bounce too! As for atmospherics it's never going to be the same, it's a sim, you know the old adage, "you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time" How true.

Yeah your right, I guess I expect too much... then again that's me

I just thought that if the freeware BVE could get the feel of the track down then RS should also be able to do it, don't like the lack of feel it sounds like your driving with earplugs on nothing at all like the real thing.

When RS was first released it did feature an attempt at cab sway. Unfortunately, at speed this gave the impression of the train being in a fixed position and the track zig-zagging in front of the train (akin to staggered catenary) rather than the correct result as seen in BVE, Zusi, Loksim etc.

The effect was therefore removed in SP1.

Not sure if SP2 has addressed the issue or there are future plans to fix it.

I can verify that my last trip to the IOW (some years ago), the ride was very lively on the jointed track with the 1923 stock. I expect it is all CWR now or the joints welded out but to me some sort of cab sway/suspension effect is vital in a next gen train sim.

I remember posting about that on the official forums and quoting BVE, I had a response from RSDL, quote "We have reached the source of the train bounce currently seen in Rail Simulator and have ripped it out. We intend to implement something more accurate in the future rather than improve what was already there.

RSadam" Unquote.

Mart,

As someone who has considerable cab mileage in Class 483 units, I can confirm that their ride is somewhat lively on the Island, which is mainly down to the track alignment. They did ride much more smoothly on the better track on the mainland. Generally though the units are quiet except for the track noise and associated bogie noise. There is little noise from the traction equipment, except a quiet ticking when doing static testing in the depot. There is a pop from the line breakers though if opened under load. The traction motor gears do make a bit of a hum when underload, if the weather is warm. There is none of the electrical equipment noise that you used to get with the Class 485 units. The only significant brake noise comes if the brake controller is put to emergency or the DSD released causing an emergency brake application. There is a small hum sometimes accompanied by a bit of a rattle as the brake pipe is charged up following changing ends etc. The brake blocks (composite type) make very little noise when compared with the cast iron ones on other stock.
As you probably remember we did have a version of track sway in the original version of RS. Personally I don;t think it was very good, you can only get the real effects if you are subject to the accelerations as well. Perhaps someone could come up with an interactive seat!

Get the missus to stand behind you and pull back on yer shoulders when accelerating, and push forwards when braking. Also she could shake the seat randomly while shouting 'get off that bl**dy computer and paint that ceiling/mow the lawn (select as appropriate)' for extra effect.

Just an idea!

Tell you what, there's some hot looking women on the platforms of the Isle of Wight - might go for my hols if the simulation is accurate to real life!!!

Hi Mark, i would not disagree with you as i have never even ridden them on the IOW perhaps several times on the London Underground in the sixties which would have been unmodified, but i wasn't posting about the atmosphere sonicm was, and i think if you read the original post you will see my reply, you see my experience of LU stock is driving BVE! I have no idea how true to life the reproduction of sound is but i would guess a fair approximation and when you go over breaks in the power rails there is a noise from the interlocks? And as for cab sway and bounce i will copy again my reply to Vern with a quote from RSAdam,

"We have reached the source of the train bounce currently seen in Rail Simulator and have ripped it out. We intend to implement something more accurate in the future rather than improve what was already there.

RSadam" Unquote.

Yes..thanks for producing the Isle of Wight route, stunning scenery/trackwork...like the signal box with animated signalman...could do with a few more of those for route builders! Amazing stock...coaches superb. Sound on the steam loco Invincible is nice at low speed, shunting etc but sounds a bit naff becoming more like a machinegun after 15-20mph, when the regulator is shut, everything is to quiet and that spoils the atmosphere a lot, I think some better coasting sounds would greatly improve the overall effect. The locos whistle is top notch...sounds great...overall........very impressed :D

Thanks once again from me, an extremely well done route :)

Running end to end and switching cabs and running back is brill, and it doesn't get boring cos all the distances are spot on so there are never bits that drag on :)

Looking forward to all future products from RSDL,

My nephew also loves it, we drove a 483 from Ryde st johns to the pier head and back to the interchange station with the steam railway (which neccisated me moving the other 483 across to the siding, which i didn't mind one bit :) then when we got to the station we 'walked' across to the steam railway (where i had already added some coaches to the loco) got in and straight away he went for the whistle, and so we started chuffing out of the station and with a toot he said "Its just like Thomas" and hes only 4, what surprised me even more was when he pointed to a mile post just out of havenstreet and said "5" I couldn't believe my ears, he can't read yet and yet hes reading out of Railsimulator

For my 18th birthday on Thursday, I finally got a new PC that will run RS properly. I was seriously considering the I of W route but mainly for the fantastic look of the tube stock. I was hoping for the sounds to be just as good, but after reading some of the comments here, really it's put me off .
I'm still not sure anyway...
