Help With Graphics Cards

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Hi Overmarze,
Not too familiar with AMD what is that equivalent to in Intel terms. I get very little Judder now when Tiles load since I played around with the Page files. KRS does not seem to make good use of Ram.

Hi Overmarze,
I have 2 gigs of ram but KRS on testing only seems to take the memory up to or just over 1 gig. which means if there are 512mb of processes running. It only has 512mb of memory to play with. Have always been puzzled about this. My other Games seem to use more Ram therefore not using the page file as much.

As requested.

For C Drive with OS

For D Drive where I have KRS

The above seems to work well for me but this will vary from machine to machine depending on Hardware, Free Space, Type of Drive and OS etc.

Well then it's your processor overmarze.

KRS uses substantial amounts of CPU power for the Physics. Intel Core 2 Duo or better is where it's at in those stakes. :)

I have two separate Internal Drives. So one page file on each Drive.

Just out of interest I have a 3.2ghz Intel Dual Core. ( Intel Pentium Dual Core D940 3.2 GHz ) not as good as Core 2 Duo. I have read that KRS and programs not specifically designed for Multicore CPU's will not benefit from having Multicore CPU's. I believe Flight Sim FSX has an update to make use of these latest CPU's.

Also if you haven't got it, download Alacrity PC, configure it and run always before you start RS, makes a big difference on most machines, i also use a memory manager freeRam xp pro, i have 2 gig of ram and when RS finnishes loading it leaves me sometimes with about 700mb or 450mb, once the route has loaded i colapse RS to the desktop and free the ram back up, has no effect on the sim just give it 30 seconds before you restore RS.

Depends if you are running Vista or not.

Vista forces applications to utilise both cores generally. People slate Vista, but in this respect it makes much better use of your PC.

Yeah, the Pentium D is based around the old Netburst infrastructure and doesn't really act like a true dual core machine unfortunately, Intel were obviously just trying to squeeze the last $$$ from the Pentium franchise and Netburst. :)
