To SP3 or not to SP3
Don't know if this has been covered elsewhere but my windows update thingy flashed up this morning about SP3 for XP being available. I have read it can clash with some programs etc. and wondered if anyone had installed it and if it affects KRS in any way. Having just got my computer working again and KRS running properly I don't want to upset the apple cart with this update.
Thanks and Regards James.

Re: To SP3 or not to SP3
Hi
I installed XP SP3 about a month ago when it came out on my laptop and it has made absolutley no difference to it whatsoever. Both KRS and MSTS both run fine with it so I would say go for it. (Fingers crossed

Think I'll wait to see if others post about any issues before attempting it myself - how brave is that.
Kind regards, Paul.

I am inclined to agree with you on this point. Maybe this topic will enable a decision if people respond with ther comments as time goes on. I will need quite a number of positive comments before I decide.Blackpatch wrote:Think I'll wait to see if others post about any issues before attempting it myself - how brave is that.

Re: To SP3 or not to SP3
Hi James,
Well unlike earlier service packs, it has not broken MSTS (SP2 made consists case sensitive), nor Route_Riter (SP1 broke lots of bits), so as far as I can see it is working pretty much like SP2 with no problems at all.
No doubt that statement will come back and bite me

Re: To SP3 or not to SP3
Thanks for that Mike. I had major problems with SP2 on my old machine and had to upgrade a load of programs. So SP3 does not seem as bad in that department from your findings. I will have to make a decision soon because I have switched the windows update warning off ATM so it won't bother me everyday.I am glad it doesn't seem to have affected MSTS because I still use it occasionally. Presumably your RS Tools also run Ok with it as this is a much used program for me and many others with KRS.
Regards James.

just a side note, i don't run RS on my laptop but i've updated it to SP3 last night, and ever since it's given me hell, sluggish performance and constant freezing! Im certainly not risking it with my PC now

Hi
Unless I am reading the blurb incorrectly, this is only a service pack for the Office suite and not for XP generally.

Re: To SP3 or not to SP3
No - it is a service pack for the operating system.
Office 2003 SP3 has been out some time.

Re: To SP3 or not to SP3
No there is a SP3 for Windows XP which has recently been released on windows update. It is a rollup of all hotfixes and patches since SP2 and a few new things thrown in.Acorncomputer wrote:Hi

Re: To SP3 or not to SP3
Even though I have everything set to auto update, I have not been notified of this update as yet. Clearly something not working correctly as usual.

Re: To SP3 or not to SP3
I don't believe it is actively being pushed right now. I know if you go to Windows Update it will be offered and my understanding is that when your PC routinely polls for updates (about once a week as far as I recall) it will then be offered. That staggers the load on the download servers - it is a big download and takes upto an hour to install. So it could be another few days before people get the pop-ups.
So far I have done one XP Pro PC and one on XP Media Center 2005 with no issues.

And if your update download hangs, which it did on both of my machines, the second attempt worked, took about 1/2 an hour on each machine, check your hard-drive indicator, it's the only way you can tell if the download is continuing until the loading bars appear.

Re: To SP3 or not to SP3
Hi all,
I installed SP3 yesterday on my Acer Laptop and it has worked fine on all my stuff so far. It installed in about 40 minutes with no problems.
I have gone into Rail Sim twice since then and edited my new route without any problems.
The only thing I did notice was flying along my S&D 'added to' route stuttered a bit more than usual, but that was only during flying. Having said that I think that the S&D altered route with my additions and alterations was filling up my available memory before I installed SP3, so that stuttering was no real surprise when I think about it!
My laptop is two years old now and has a reasonably good graphics card (ATI X700). So far so good!
regards Ted.
