Having done about 3 months work on my route, I badly corrupted it whilst using the elevation tool such that it was well beyond repair and I then deleted it completely. I had previously copied the route file complete but simply copying it into the same directory as the other routes didn't result in it appearing as a route in the game.
How do I restore??

Ooops
Well, best thing is to make periodic backups of the \content\routes.xml file. That file is the one that defines each route and generates the list, so when you delete the route, all the code is removed from the routes.xml file and the route no longer shows up in the list. Easiest way to fix it now;
http://steam4me.railpage.org.au/RailSim ... route.html
Create a new route with the same name as the old one, then copy the contents of the backup folder into the folder for the new route. How do I know which is the new route? RStoolsTMB is something you'll need eventually anyway if you're developing routes.

Let's say I accidentally delete PO&N US1, and restoring the \Rail Simulator\Content\Routes\823d1d2d-fa4b-433d-843b-87ac16ad83bb folder doesn't work, since there's no longer any code in the routes.xml file listing PO&N and pointing to the \823d1d2d-fa4b-433d-843b-87ac16ad83bb folder. So I make a new route named PO&N US3, start the Check Routes and Scenarios utility, and note the new folder is \d7b39091-c2b5-44c4-beaf-6ed5047db8a6. So in Windows Explorer I go to the \823d1d2d-fa4b-433d-843b-87ac16ad83bb folder, select all and copy. Change to the \d7b39091-c2b5-44c4-beaf-6ed5047db8a6 folder, paste. Now all the track, scenery, terrain, textures, and scenarios from the old route are in the new one.
Best way to make periodic backups of the route is to package it, that way you can delete and install it as if it were a new route. What I usually do is don't delete from the menu, instead I delete the contents of the folder and copy the contents of the backup folder in.

Re: Backing up and restoring
Hi
I play it really safe and copy the whole Rail Simulator folder after each route building session and keep about 15 copies in the pool. It takes about 10 minutes to make the copy but in the event of a problem, I delete the whole current RS file and replace it with a copy of the whole back up folder.
I have only had to do this once or twice but it is very quick and easy and you only lose the work you have done in the current session.

Re: Backing up and restoring
Hi all,
The way I backup my own route is to open up the Content\Routes folder, create a new folder called SDJsaveXX, XX being a simple serial number, then I open my route folder, select all, right click and select copy. Next I go back to the Routes folder, open my SDJsaveXX folder, right click and paste.
When I want to reload my save, I open the SDJsaveXX, select all, right click and select copy, and then I go back into the Routes folder and open my route folder, right click and select paste.
I have 'messed up' quite a few times and this method has worked every time. I am currently on Save number 92! I keep about four saves on my hard drive at any one time, deleting the older ones as I go. Every now and again I also save one of these SDJsave files onto CD or DVD, just in case my hard drive gives up the ghost anytime. I have also saved the Assets folder onto DVD from time to time as well, so that I can easily retrieve all those locos, signals, etc that I've downloaded over the months.
Regards from an Old Chap.

Re: Backing up and restoring
I back up my Route Folder 9e-xxxxx whatever and the Route xml. and bin. Files after every session of working on my Route.
I then have a choice on restoring methods. Snipers method is one I have used previously which works well.
Regards James
